Yang Style Tai Ji (Tai Chi)

 Most Popular Tai Ji Style

The Yang Style Tai Ji Chuan (Supreme Ultimate Boxing) is the most popular and commonly practiced style in the 21st Century. This can be attributed to the form and manner of the style with its even and slow tempo of movements, suitable for both the young and old. In practicing this style, the whole body is relaxed and moves with maximum smoothness, minimum interruptions, transferring bodily weight and forces with Yin and Yang dynamic balance.

Lineage of Masters and Instructors

 Ancient art originating from China

Most records show the general acceptance of the legendary Zhang Sanfeng, circa 12th century, as the originator of the ancient Tai Ji form. Wang Zongyue was one of his students who taught Chen Wangting, after whom 5 major classical family Tai Ji styles developed down the generations of students; the Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu/Hao, and Sun styles.

Chen Wangting’s student Chen Changxing taught Yang Lu-ch’an, who developed the Yang Style. Yang Lu-ch’an taught Yang Chien-hou, who instructed Yang Ch’eng-fu. Cheng Man-Ch’ing was one of Yang Ch’eng-fu’s students who later developed the contemporary Yang Style 37 Form, while the Chinese Sports Commission developed the 24 Form. (For more information, please refer to Cheng, Man-ch'ing, and Robert W. Smith, 'T'ai Chi: The "Supreme Ultimate" Exercise for Health, Sport and Self-Defense.' Lee Bar Chwee learnt the Yang Style Tai Ji from Lu Tong-Bao, the disciple of Cheng Man-Ch'ing and also directly from Cheng. Master Lee is the chief instructor of the Sin Kwang Tai Chi Atheletics Association in Singapore. He has performed in many martial arts shows, demonstrating the art of Tai Ji and internal strength with his disciples in Singapore and Malaysia. His students include young and old folks in the community, and political and social elites of the country. He was awarded for his long term contribution to the community. Lee, with his team of instructors (including Bay Joo-Hwa when he was in Singapore), holds classes in various community centres and venues to promote health among Singaporeans.
