PFA stands for People For Animals. It is headed by India's popular animal activist Mrs. Maneka Gandhi. PFA has more than 150 branches all over India. Agra branch is headed by Dr(Ms) Surat P Gupta. Agra Headquarter is at 54-Nehru Nagar . PFA spearheads a popular movement for respecting all life on this earth and is a small but crucial part of India's growing environment awareness. Every religion has spoken for animals in some way or the other. In one incident of Satya Sai Baba, a woman was taking food for him in a thali. On the way she saw a hungry looking dog . Taking pity on the poor creature, she fed him the food. Realising she had a few more chapattis, she went back home to get them for Sai Baba. On the way she again saw a pig in pathetic condition. She once again gave him the food. Since she had no more food left, she went to Sai Baba and apologized saying that she did not have any food for him that day. To this Sai Baba smiled and replied," I have already eaten the food that you had made for me. It was delicious." Holy books of ALL the religions are abundant with such anecdotes. We all live in a country where 'Ahimsa' is emphasized. Yet millions of animals are battered, blinded, force-fed steroids, dissected, mutilated and eventually, killed every year, often for no reason at all. Many more are condemned to a lifetime of backbreaking slavery and then, in their old age, sent off to slaughter houses or thrown out on the streets. Is this what is taught to us by our religion? Every creature on this Earth is the creation of God. It has been said time and again by the Holy Saints that in every creation resides God. So doesn't it become our prime obligation to respect his Creations. And since we consider ourselves superior to the rest of the creatures, it becomes our moral obligation to take care of all the creatures on this Earth. Taking this ideology as a base, PFA Agra was initiated in which injured stray animals, who are not cared for, are treated. We believe that animals have the same right to live as human beings. Humans have exploded in number and have occupied more place thus making animals feel like a nuisance. We as PFA believe in the ethical treatment of animals. Thus we have undertaken the task of looking after stray animals in our city Agra. We have treated more than 15000 stray animals through our helpline, who otherwise would not have been able to survive. These animals include cows, bulls, horses, donkeys, dogs, etc. Some of the animals brought to us are in such a pitiful condition that it is hard to believe that man can be so cruel. It is said that nature is cruel; but man is more cruel. We have organized animal treatment camps at various places in the city where animals At various places in the city we have built water
troughs for animals. We have a 400 strong membership consisting basically
