About
CHRISTIANITY
What is Christianity?
Christianity is simply a relationship with God. The basic outline of Christianity can be seen in the wider context of the whole of humanity, and also in the personal lives of every one of us.
God created us
Humanity As seen at the start of Genesis, God created the whole universe, and the pinnacle of his creation was humanity. We were made to have a relationship with God, and also to have relationships with other people. God gave us work to do, to look after the earth.
Personal Each one of us was created individually, and God loves each one of us and wants a unique relationship with us.
We turned away from God
Humanity Also seen near the start of Genesis, humanity chose to neglect their relationship with God, neglect their relationships with other people, and neglect their responsibility to care for the earth. This is known as Sin.
Personal At some point of our lives we have all sinned and done things that have been against God's will and have ignored our side of the relationship.
God gives us a chance to turn back to him
Humanity God did not turn his back on humanity. Despite the fact that they really messed things up, God still loved us. So he set about a way to bring us back to him. He sent his Son, Jesus, to earth to die and take the punishment for our sins. Therefore, we can be freed from the mess we have made and be made right in God's eyes. The only condition is that we try and turn back to how it was in the beginning, with a relationship with God.
Personal When he looks at you, he loves you and gives you an opportunity to have a relationship with him. He is constantly asking, all it takes is for you to accept him.
Jesus will return
Humanity Some time in the future, Jesus will return to earth. Then, earth and heaven will disappear and be replaced by a new heaven and a new earth. People who have turned to God will continue to live with God in this new heaven and earth, and those who rejected God will be cast into hell.
Personal When Jesus returns, judgement day will follow. This means that you have to stand before God, and if you have accepted him, he will accept you, but if you have rejected him, he will reject you. It's up to you to decide what happens.
Questions about Christianity
Why didn't Jesus write the Bible?
In most of the world's religions, the Holy Book is written by the founder of that religion. According to Islam, the Qur'an was given to Muhammad by Allah, according to Hinduism, according to Buddhism, and so on. However the Christian Bible was written by many different people over at least a thousand years. How then can this be accurate. So why didn't Jesus write the Bible, as he was the founder of Christianity.
The Bible is divided into two parts the Old Testament, written before Jesus, and the New Testament, written after Jesus. They are divided into two sections because the coming of Jesus was such a significant event.
The Old Testament has many parts to it, involving history...
The New Testament was written after Jesus rose to heaven, by a number of people. There are four accounts of the life of Jesus, which are all from different perspectives, and all tie in together to produce a complex and varied account of the life of Jesus. Most of the rest of the New Testament is made up of letters to the early Churches, started soon after Jesus rose to heaven.
If Jesus wrote the Bible, then it would not be able to contain all this variety of writing, it would just be teachings. However, the Bible as it had been written gives us insight into the character of God, by looking right the way through his involvement with people over thousands of years. This gives Christianity more authenticity than it would have if it was just written all in one go by one person. The Bible is not a rule book, rather, it helps us to understand God better and improve our relationship with him.
