Our Father's Plan: Liturgy and Worship --
A Course on Prayer and the Sacraments

The third and final course of the three-year upper grade Relgion Program, this class focuses primarily on the Sacraments, and the nature of Catholic worship.  It also incorporates some supplemental, teacher-created units.  The class is meant to pull together and reinforce the material from the previous two years.

Course Objectives (taken from upper grade Religion curriculum)

To complete, as much as possible, what was begun in 6th grade and continued in 7th grade:  the unfolding of the drama of Salvation History as recorded in the Bible and of which the Catholic Church is the consummation.

To insure a good basic understanding of the beliefs of the Catholic Faith.

To show, as far as possible, that the Catholic Faith is reasonable, and not simply a set of rules meant to take away people's freedom, or the "fun out of life."

To show that the Catholic Faith is a
revealed religion, given by God, which truly has the answers to life's "big questions."

To give students a solid grounding in morality and orthodoxy, as they may never hear this ever again once they graduate.
To encourage students to realize that they will never find real happiness if God is missing from their lives.

To show that if God does exist, then He must have provided some way to know that:  prayer and study are two keys to recognizing this.

To encourage them to not simply skate through life claiming to believe in God -- if they do believe, even if they don't understand everything, they must take the next step, which is to seriously examine the Catholic Faith.

They must understand, or at least hear, that Baptism is absolutely necessary for salvation, whether of water, desire, or blood (that is, martyrdom).

To teach students, as accurately as possible, about each of the Sacraments, and why God has established them as the ordinary means of transmitting His grace.

To educate students about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass -- what it is, and what it isn't -- and to instill in them a deep respect for it.

To familiarize students with the Church's liturgical calendar.

To educate students about one of the most intriguing relics in the Church's history, the
Shroud of Turin, and to give them the most up-to-date scientific understanding of it as a means of encouraging faith in the Resurrection of Jesus.

To give students a good understanding of the office of the Pope.

To expose students to the glory and majesty of the Mass by having them attend at least one Mass at a Catholic Church other than St. Therese, such as
St. John Cantius, St. Mary of the Angels, etc., during the school year.
