| Course Objectives (taken from Grade 6 English curriculum) By the time students have completed the sixth grade, they should be able to: Define what a sentence is and distinguish between complete sentences and sentence fragments. Identify the complete subject and complete predicate in a sentence. Recognize the four different kinds of sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory). Extend their sentences using conjunctions. Define and recognize nouns. Identify and use singular, plural, common, proper, and possessive nouns. |
| Define and recognize verbs and their principal parts. Identify and use action verbs, helping verbs, and linking verbs. Recognize direct objects and distinguish between transitive and intransitive verbs. Name and use verbs in past, present, and future tenses. Use verbs that agree with their subjects -- this is extremely important. Identify and use contractions. Recognize and use certain irregular verbs. Define and recognize adjectives. Identify articles and demonstrative adjectives. Make comparisons using adjectives. Write sentences following rules of proper capitalization and punctuation, including punctuation for dialogue. Define and recognize pronouns and their antecedents. Recognize and distinguish between subject and object pronouns and use the appropriate pronoun after linking verbs. Use possessive pronouns. Define and recognize adverbs, including adverbs that modify adjectives or other adverbs. Distinguish between adjectives and adverbs. Make comparisons using adverbs. Define and recognize prepositions and prepositional phrases. Expand their sentences using prepositional phrases. Materials 1. | This is the only English class I teach; I do not teach 7th or 8th grade English -- there is simply no room in the schedule for me to do that. This class aims at getting students to learn the basics of English grammar and vocabulary, and to use it correctly. Since St. Therese School has a bilingual population, most of which speaks English as a second language, it is critical that they learn the basics at an early age. The program has met with varying success. |
