Course Objectives (taken from upper grade Reading curriculum) To have students read and comprehend at grade level. To continue to study irony. To introduce students to the works of O. Henry, and to have them explore the plots and themes of some of his most famous stories. To have students think critically about some of the themes and problems they encounter in what they read, such as that of sacrificial love, or preparation for death, and to respond to these issues in essays. To introduce students to the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe, and to the major themes of death, madness, perverseness/self-destruction, premature burial, etc., as he treated them in his stories and poems.
To provide students with the chance to think creatively by writing original continuations of certain stories. To give the class a look into traditional Jewish life, religious practice, and culture by reading, as an in-class play, the script of Fiddler on the Roof. To increase pupils' grade-level vocabulary by their completion of vocabulary exercises and sentence writing. To introduce students to the literary concepts of main character/protagonist, antagonist, and conflict. To increase the young peoples' ability to read aloud / speak in public by means of a speech unit that includes a pre-written piece, an original speech, and group skit presentations. To introduce pupils to the literary concepts of point of view, as well as the omniscient and limited omniscient versions of these. Material for the class is drawn from both the Reading text and from photocopied handouts provided by the teacher. Materials 1. Textbook: Reading Literature 2. Students will need their 6th grade Reading notebook, which they should keep both this year and the next. Some Fun Stuff: Since Fiddler on the Roof tends to be wildly popular every year (since it started in 1999), I figured it would be fun to dedicate a page to it. This will probably be of greater interest to former 7th graders who have already taken it than to those who haven't, but it doesn't matter. Hope you enjoy!
Reading 7 continues what was begun in grade 6, with a few new elements to broaden students' exposure to the various forms of literature. Among other things, students can expect units of O. Henry and Edgar Allan Poe stories, as well as the unbelievably successful (and really fun!) Fiddler on the Roof unit. Also, students are normally introduced to the basics of public speaking during this year.
