Yi Wei Wins Chicago Symphony Orchestra Youth Auditions Finals!
Saturday, March 13, 2004

SYMPHONY CENTER, DOWNTOWN CHICAGO --
St. Therese alumna Yi Wei (Class of 2002) has won the Youth Auditions Finals held at Symphony Center in Downtown Chicago.  Having been selected in February to progress to the final stage of the contest, she competed with three other young musicians in the Center's Armour Hall at 1:30 PM in front of judges, parents, and supporters.

Two of the young ladies performed on the French horn while Yi and
Victoria Aschheim, another member of the Percussion Scholarship Program and also in the same grade, played pieces for the marimba.  A randomly-selected order placed Yi as last to perform.

Yi's piece, the
Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, Op. 34 by Robert Kurka, is one of the most difficult pieces for the marimba... which of course made Yi want to play it all the more.  And she played it with authority, eliciting an awed gasp and tremendous applause from the audience at its conclusion.

At the reception following, it was officially announced that Yi had won -- and will perform the piece next year,
accompanied by the entire Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The attendees burst into applause, while Yi burst into tears, at the news that so many had been hoping for.

I myself, along with Ms. Carol Hang, had the privilege of being there and congratulating Yi.  I told her we'd still love her even if she didn't win.
