Mr. Robert Bishop again asks:
Are you passing along the information in these memos to others in
your family? He alsos states The Perrigo Papers need more
readers.
| David Perrigo
[21] is the featured ancestor in this issue. David is
recorded as being born in Skenesboro, N.Y. cc 1760-61
Since the Cutler account states David's mother was a Flint,
we must assume that his father Joseph Perrigo [16] had more than one wife as the other "brothers" mentioned do not make this reference. Rufus Perrigo [19] was born in Dover, N.Y. either before or after David, most likely earlier. Skenesboro, later renamed Whitehall is purported to be the birthplace of the American Navy. The town first got its name from Philip Skene,a British army officer who obtained a large land grant at the southern end of the Lake Champlain, was pro-British in the early fighting up and down that great waterway. The Americans, in due course, were to develop into the Green Mountain Boys and make Vermont history. |
Due to some bad military
advice which Skene gave the British as to how strong the
Americans were he was to lose, not only his huge grant of
land, but a mansion, a blockhouse, sawmill, and smithy
furnace for converting local ores into mallable iron. His
properties were very prized by the Americans as together
they made possible the ship construction the Americans
needed to start their own navy. Philip Skene was a
British loyalist who accompanied Burgoyne and the British
forces as they chased the Americans south and caught up
with them at Hubbardton and Benington. The British won
the first battle but lost the second one at Bennington.
While David Perrigo was in both battles, it was a
Bennington that he made the history books. Joseph Perrigo, Davids father, could well have been working as a mariner in the Skenesboro area as Skene was heavy into trading. A mariner role is, of course, conjecture. |
