My room. Started guitar way back in 96-97 in VJC. Only knew simple chords, know nothing about electric guitar. Dad bought an acoutic guitar for me in 97, some cheap korean made guitar, brand called Academy from Renner.
Knew I had to get an electric if I wanted to progress/play what I wanted to play. Before going to NS in dec 97, finally bought an Ibanez RG470 with Fender Frontman amp. But couldn't play anything, so joined yamaha music school. Over 4 months, learnt simple stuff from Patrick like string bending, palm muting, and simple licks. Left after 4 months as my class was disbanded twice ( not enough students ) and I felt I had enough electric basics to go on my own. I had been playing classical piano since I was 8, therefore I could apply similar theory stuff to the electric guitar. Progress was slow. Then I was a pay-clerk at SAF Payroll and Allowance. I found out about SAF Music and Drama Company ( MDC ) through a friend called Zhonghao. Seems like heaven on earth as they played music day in and out! Applied for an audition. Seems that they emphasised on note reading. Cheem chords like Abmaj7b5 freaked me out. I failed the audition. Then I practised with a vengence, I know my note-reading was fine, it's those funny chords that were impossible! Went back for re-audition after a month or so, and yes I passed this time! But things weren't so simple. My boss at PAD didn't want to let me go, hence I was stuck at PAD for a few months. The break came when one of my Warrant Officers Mdm Kang helped to pave a way out of PAD. MDC seemed to be the most conducive place to improve. One can practise for the whole day, with roadshows averaging 1-5times a week. Went on to NUS after ORDing in june 2000. Was dragged into CACS ( Cultural Activities and Community Service ) guitar club by a good friend Jeffery. Began playing regularly in NUS. Main event was the JamX in 2001. That was the last big thing I played for guitar club. I've been tuning down since then. Playing mostly with Wenhui, sometimes at Guitar Gatherings etc. |
