Ivy Alliance Event: Smithies are invited to Bowling with Yale
Wednesday, June 21 at 7PM
at Palo Alto Bowl, Bowling alley

We all know that dehydration plus heat stress lead to poor work performance. So if your office water fountain isn't enough to quench your thirst, come celebrate the hot start of the summer with us. The next happy hour is the unique opportunity to mingle and beat the heat.

Summer is the season to be ... bowling! Drinking and bowling is the urban-chic form of the game, where entertainment and atmosphere are as important as strikes and spares. Whether you are a closet pro- bowler, or at the top of your game in gutter balls, all are welcome.

If you're not into bowling, but have some time to spare, come hang out and strike... the pose.

Starting at 7pm, come find us at the bar. The summer is coming so gear up and get ready for some alley antics!

RSVP information still to come.

San Jose Repertory Theatre: Hannah and Martin

"You'll enjoy this exercise in drama. It'll satisfy your intellect and leave your thirst for entertainment quenched."

Please RSVP to Wendy Marti at 650-564-9838 or [email protected]

About Hannah and Martin
Are there limits to freedom of speech? How do emotions bend morals?
What are the perils of personal idolatry and misplaced romanticism? How can really smart people still be deluded? These are just some of the probing questions posed by Kate Fodor in her emotionally transfixing and critically acclaimed 2003 debut play. Taking advantage of recent historical research, Fodor uses her imagination to examine the facts of the long, secret relationship between two towering figures of 20th-century thought. Passion and principle clash as Jewish intellectual Hannah Arendt, who had to flee her native Germany as Hitler rose to power, struggles across a vast ideological divide to justify her enduring feelings for Nazi-sympathizing philosopher Martin Heidegger, her former mentor and sometime lover. As it spans the horrors of the Holocaust and its aftermath, Fodor's argumentative play bristles with subtle insights and, rather than rendering judgment, leaves us to ponder the painful complexities of life.

This exciting regional program, previously held in Boston, is now being brought to Northern California by the Alumnae Education program. Faculty presenters include professors Mahnaz Mahdavi, Randall Bartlett and Roger Kaufman of Smith's Economics Department. In discussions and small-group workshops you'll learn the principles of investing, how to balance your life and your checkbook, the language of finance, how to plan for retirement, and how to save for your first home. Breakout sessions organized by life-stage should offer something for everyone whether you are a recent graduate just getting started, are beginning to plan for retirement or are somewhere in between. Plus, there will be opportunities to discuss the issues that are important to your own financial freedom.

The Smith Club of the Peninsula invites you to attend a private viewing of the documentary film: Terror's Children with a discussion about the film with its producer Sharmeen Obaid Smith '01 and current Stanford School of Journalism graduate student. The film was first broadcast on the Discovery Times Channel in March 2003.

Obaid was raised in Karachi, Pakistan and returned to her homeland to portray the lives of seven children who fled war in Afghanistan to Pakistan refugee camps. "These displaced people are captured on camera caught between two difficult and unsatisfying situations. Terror's Children does offer some hope; but more important, it puts a face on the very young who suffer in the shadows of war and terrorism... the results are compelling, and you can't help but be moved by the plight of these children, whose lives are wholly uninvolved in the politics that put them in this situation."

San Francisco Opera

Sunday, September 20
2:00PM

San Francisco Opera (and particularly Opera employee and Mount Holyoke '95 alumna Jennifer Lynch) would like to extend a special invitation to you for a memorable operatic event celebrating Susan B. Anthony!

Please join your fellow members of the Mount Holyoke Northern CA and Peninsula Clubs, the Seven Sisters and the Ivy Alliance at the War Memorial Opera House for the Bay Area premiere of the American opera "The Mother of Us All."

"The Mother of Us All" chronicles the life, career and accomplishments of suffragette Susan B. Anthony in her struggle for women's political rights. With text by Gertrude Stein and music by Virgil Thomson, this whimsical and vibrant pageant offers a parade of other historical figures including John Quincy Adams, Ulysses S. Grant and Daniel Webster.

This witty piece is the favorite American opera of SFO's General Director Pamela Rosenberg. Stein's libretto blends history and fiction seamlessly in the same moment, with her signature use of language. Thomson's music is quintessentially American, a tuneful quilt of traditional folk tunes, gospel hymns, marches, and sentimental ballads.

The production stars native Bay Area soprano Luana DeVol as Susan B. Anthony, who has twice been honored by the German opera magazine Opernwelt as "Singer of the Year." The renowned San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus will perform under the baton of Music Director Donald Runnicles.

The Opera and the MHC Clubs are currently putting the finishing touches on a special group sale offer--featuring a FREE "Opera Talk" lecture one hour before the performance and ticket discounts of up to 20%--for the 2:00pm matinee performance on Sunday, September 21, 2003.

More details on the event, including how to purchase tickets, will follow via email next week. We hope to see you there!

US Bancorp Piper Jaffray Investment Banking, 275 Middlefield Road, Ste A100, Menlo Park, CA 94025.

Now that our Alma Mater is preparing current Smithies for the world of investing, saving and spending with finance courses, isn’t it time we brushed up on the subject ourselves? We weren’t so lucky to learn those skills at Smith –many of us learned them the hard way, or are still learning them.

Come join us for an evening of information and discussion with an investment consultant from Piper Jaffray’s Wealth Management Group: Adam Ezrilov. He will draw on his extensive finance experience and present information modeled after a national best-selling book titled "Smart Women Finish Rich." The book was written by David Bach, Ezrilov’s former business partner at Morgan Stanley.

This won't be just a pep talk as to how to invest/why to invest, but more of a thorough review of the basic and time-tested investment prinicples, presented in a interactive fashion. All attendees will take home action steps that can be immediately put to use.
