A baseline study of the avifauna in the peat
swamp forest at Tasek Bera was conducted over a total of 29 days. The objective of this
study was to assess species diversity of the avian community in that particular habitat.
Two methods were utilized namely mist-netting and field observations, as each method is
biased to a different species assemblage. A total of 172 individuals from 29 species and
12 families were netted. Through observations, 75 species from 36 families were recorded
including several migrant species. No bird species was found during the study that is
entirely confined to peat swamp forest, but some rare and vulnerable birds were recorded.
Despite being within a protected area, the avian community is facing threats from habitat
destruction and modification.
