Birds are present almost anywhere. All it takes
is careful observation and patience. Even if you live in a high-rise building you
can observe the birds in the air, flying around and above your place. Although there
may not be that many species, they are birds nonetheless and can be watched like any other
birds in other habitats. The types of birds usually vary differently in different
habitats.
To identify a bird, you need to observe and take note,
not only the plumage colour and markings but also the size of the bird. Other
features, like long or short tail, colour of eyes, legs and bill, will be useful too.
The habitat and the birds' behavior will sometimes prove helpful in identifying
similar looking birds. A bird's call or song may be the only means of field
identification for some very similar looking species.
Do not simply just identify a bird without being sure
of the species identification even for the most commonest of birds. Apart from
noting down the identification features of the birds you have observed, you should note
down the date, time and location of the bird sightings as well. All these may be
quite useful for future reference and record purposes.
