Dr. Neoh Chin Boon
( photo left), a general
surgeon in private hospital practice in Penang, Malaysia, is an avid birdwatcher and a
self-taught bird artist.
A member of Malaysian Nature Society and a keen supporter
of Worldwide Fund for Nature Malaysia, his interest in birdwatching and painting began way
back in 1967 as a student in Penang Free School. He started by using watercolours
but has since switched to acrylics.
Birds in flight are most fascinating to him as subtle
colour patterns emerge when the wings are extended from a folded rest position. And,
he specialises in acrylics to express his intricate observations of nature for our viewing
pleasure.
"I immensely enjoy sharing my art. Nature is
so challenging and magnificent - cherish it, protect it. It's a powerful legacy for
our future generations.", said he.
"It is my life-long ambition to be able to paint all
the birds found in Malaysia.", he added. To date, he has painted over 180
species.
He has participated in numerous art exhibitions
especially those held to raise funds for nature conservation. It is his way to
emphasize the urgent need to preserve our natural environment for the next millenium.
Here are some of his paintings:
