Activities of the Muslim Association of Bradford

MAB’s first major project was to set up a Mosque (Howard Street) in 1958 for the local Muslim population of Bradford. This was the second Mosque in the UK and the first in the Yorkshire area. During the 1960’s the Mosque catered for all Muslim worshippers and provided facilities to accommodate religious teaching for the children.

During the 1970’s the MAB became one of the first Muslim organisations to become a Registered Charity and, in the late 1970’s, it was a key player in the formation of the Council For Mosques (CFM) in Bradford. The first President of the CFM was also the Chairperson of the MAB.

The MAB made significant strides in the 1980’s, notably the establishment of the first Muslim Girls schools in Bradford. This was clearly the most challenging project the MAB had undertaken. As stated in the previous section, the MAB encountered many struggles, both financial and physical, firstly in acquiring Full Registration and then in acquiring Voluntary Aided Status (VAS). However, the MAB has persevered to surmount these struggles, often defying the odds, and has gained valuable experience and immense respect locally and nationally.
