Origin of Pascal's Triangle

Hsiang Chieh Chiu Chang Suan Fa, an ancient Chinese mathematician from the fourteenth century, is said to be the first to discover the Pascal's Triangle.

However, Blaise Pascal was the first person to discover and fully develop all the patterns it contained.

According to the 13th century text, Detailed Analysis of the Mathematical Rules in the Nine Chapters (Hsiang Chieh Chiu Chang Suan Fa)

It proved the theory known as "Pascal's Triangle" 300 years before Pascal was born. Below is a picture of his version of Pascal's Triangle:

One of the topics that Pascal was interested in was the likelihood of an event occurring.

This interest was triggered by a gambler who asked Pascal to help him make better guesses about which scores would be most likely to occur when 2 dice were thrown.

In the course of his investigations, Pascal produced a triangular pattern of numbers which now bears his name. This triangular pattern of numbers is known as 'Pascal's Triangle'.
