Bhagwan Swaminarayan Life & Work Before 225 years from today, the condition of India was very pitiable. India's great heritage and the Hindu culture were being severely attacked by the Muslim and other kings. Not only this, but the public in general was also depressed by many wrong beliefs and superstitions which were largely prevalent in the country. Many Sadhu, Bawas and gurus were wrongfully taking benefit of their status by threatening the public. The situation was more worse especially in the state of Gujarat. Amid all this, one sun rose in the eastern India to free the India from the hands of those sinful people. Yes. He was our little Lord Swaminarayan. He born in a village called Chappaiya near the banks of Saryu river on the day of Ramnavmi. |

He was a child of Dharmadev and Bhaktimata. He was named as "Ghanshyam" as He was as blackish as a cloud. From the very childhood, Ghanshyam has started showing His love towards religion and scriptures. He was also a playful character and good leader among His friends. At the age of 11, eleven, He left His house to roam into India and accomplish the objective for which He came on the earth.
He roamed in whole India, barefooted, with no luggage or money. He walked in to great mountains of Himalayas, Man Sarovar and Kailash, all barefooted and with only one cloth on his body! His divine journey also covered the South India. He visited many temples, places of pilgrimage, mathas and met many people ranging from Sanyasis, Kings to a common man of India. Due to His love towards "tapa" and "tyag", He was also called as "Nilkanth" - one of the name of Lord Shiva. He gave them true knowledge and enlightened their lives. He rejuvenated the spirit of India. In the end, His journey ended in one village of Gujarat - Loya. Where He met Sadguru Muktanand Swami. In him, He saw virtues of a real God worshipper. Swami Muktanandji was a disciple of Shree Ramanand Swami. Nilkanth expressed His wish to meet Ramanand Swami before Muktanandji. Ramanand Swami was in some other town. So, Nilkanth stayed with Muktanand Swami in Loya. Here, He pleased everyone with with His nature to help everyone, love towards seva and his bhakti.
After sometime Nilkanth met Ramanad Swami. Both were pleased to meet each other. Ramanandji gave Him diksha and His new name after that was "Narayan Muni" and "Sahajanand Swami". After a year, Ramanand Swami placed Sahjanand Swami on his own place as a head of all the devotees and ordred all the devotees to obey His orders. After this, Sahjanand Swami gave His devotees the mantra - "Swaminarayan" and ordered to follow it. The word means Swami and Narayan. The former represents Bhakta (Worshipper of God) and later, Bhagwan (God).
During His period of life, He took many initiatives to prevail ekantik dharma and improve the social conditions. He created a social revolution and shaped a civilised society. For this, He didn't ever used a single weapon. He did so by giving love to the people. He gave diksha to devotees and made 500 'paramhansas'. They were the people who left their home and adopted to live single with only saffron clothes and a single utensil to eat as their belonging. They roamed all over the Gujarat amidst the fierce oppose of other bad sadhus. They transformed people's heart by their inspirational behaviour. They were fully devoted to their Lord - Sahjanand Swami. Shree Sahjanand Swami became popular in people as "Bhagwan Swaminarayan". He also built six huge and artistic temple in Ahmedabad,Vadtal, Bhuj, Gadhda, Junagadh and Dholera. He gave the message of peace and harmony.
But setting up social harmony was not only the single objective of Bhagwan Swaminarayan for coming in this world. He wanted to lit up the way towards Akshardham - His heavenly abode from this earth. For this, He defined the duties of a true worshipper and ordered His devotees to follow them. He set out them in various scriptures like -"Shikshapatri, Shree Satsangi Jivan".
The major work of Bhagwan Swaminarayan was that He promised to remain on earth Himeslf or by a God-realised Sadhu. Thus, after Him, Gunatitanand Swami, Bhagatji Maharaj, Shastriji Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj and presently, Pramukh Swami Maharaj has kept open the doors of Akshardham for devotees.
