Patrician II Quest For Power
General Tips
There are many strategies in playing this game, and many ways in which to achieve the status of Patrician. A few tips I have learned along the way in single player mode is set up your trading routes, build offices in a few towns before you start to build industries.

Enlarging your warehouse is a good idea in your home town, I usually enlarge the warehouse to max. The reason is certain goods such as fish, grain, hemp, meat, tile, timber, and wool take a good deal of space. Depending on your choice of town there will be items that frequently run low and if you want to maximize your profit you will buy low and then sell. In Cologne the town I use beer, cloth, fish, iron goods, meat, skins always tend to run low and require you to fulfill many of these later on in the game to become Lord Mayor. Grain in the winter can lead to shortages, if you are storing a reasonable amount, during the summer you can buy low and then wait until winter and sell high and this does not only apply to your town but other towns as well. This strategy works well for towns were there are no grain farms, if you town provide grain then this strategy would not apply to your town.

One of the first things I do when I start making some money is enlarging my home town warehouse to the maximum size.  The reason is certain goods such as fish, grain, hemp, meat, tile, timber, and wool take up more space then say bear, cloth, skins etc... Depending on your town, you will have some items the town will produce, I regularly buy these items at the lowest price when it is in abundance. Then have my ship takes these items and sell for the maximum amount along there trade route. In Cologne the town I start out in then town requires, beer, cloth, fish, iron good, meat, skin, and train oil regularly. As my ships are going from town to town, I keep a watch for the best price for these goods and buy some and store them in my warehouse so in the future when the towns supply runs low, I can sell the town these goods and make a nice profit while also keeping the citizens happy too. In Cologne the town supplys pottery and wine and I buy these low, store them in the warehouse until my ships reach port again, have them take a small quantity of goods, and then resell them on their routes.

In Cologne and other towns in the winter there can be a grain shortage, I buy grain in the late spring to early fall and store them until the winter when the grain supply is very short and the prices are very high. Extra grain, I do not need can be sold to other towns that do not have any grain in stock and usually have a famine symbol by these towns. This is where you can make the most money, but make sure you keep enough for you town by checking the consumption information for your town you can estimate how much you will need and what you may then dedicate for resale.

Once you get your warehouse at max, it is time to open some warehouses in other towns, and I usually max these out too. There are also times when you want to build an office in a town, maybe there are not enough supplies available to allow you to build your office. You can send your ship back to your office/warehouse and pick up the supplies needed, go back to the town where you want to build an office and then build. My goal is to have a warehouse in every town you are able to build in that way, I can buy ahead of time in the towns when the price is low, then use my ships to sell the goods, or bring them home for storage in my warehouse or for direct town sale.

One thing I do not do in the warehouse is hire an administrator, I find the administrator buys the goods at the highest price and does not work well with my buy low and sell high strategy.

Another tip, when you need weapons to avoid paying a fine, buy your weapons, then sail for the nearest port. When you reach the port change the name of your ship. Many times by doing this you can avoid being caught. As the game moves on,  you are going to need these weapons to defend your ship, buy your weapons early on, as it gets harder to find a town with no other ships in it to buy weapons when your other competitors start building up their fleets.

I later discovered a better way, using the warehouse you have in the town, make sure there is no ships including yours in port, then buy the weapons and check to make sure no ships have arrived while you are buying your weapons.  You can do this at every town you have a warehouse in, but you must make sure there are no ships in port at the time you buy your weapons and this includes ships that are being repaired too.  Another good reason for building a warehouse in every town, not only do you gain good warehouse space but an excellent way to buy weapons without be caught.

General Game Play
The  home town I picked was Cologne and then put office/warehouse buildings in Bremen, London, Lubeck, Gdansk, and Stockholm. Since Cologne you could not use the Cog ship in river towns, I used the Cog to transport large amounts of goods between the four warehouses. I stationed smaller ships that could navigate the rivers to bring the goods from the river cities to the warehouses and unload their cargo and pick up cargo they could sell in the neighboring towns. This provides a way to take goods that were in abundance in one area and buy a large quantity at a good price and then transport it to an area where the goods were in high demand and would fetch a high price.  I have my Cogs set up for delivery to London, the same town I use to send all my ships out on expedition.

The cogs ship is also good for transporting building supplies in large qualities to other warehouse where in the towns you might want to build some industries, ships, houses, etc... You can also use  the Holk which is larger then the cog too, I use these for expedition due to the large storage capacity these ships hold however just like the cog they cannot navigate the river towns. .

When the money is rolling in and I am waiting on buildings to be constructed, a way of making a few dollars is to grant loans, you receive at the term of the loan your money plus interest. The one area I found that caused me the most problems was building up industry too fast. I find when you have an industry running at 90% or higher then it is time to build another. By the time the building is finished being constructed your industry should be running close to 100%. Then when your new industry reaches the 90% it is time to build another industry and so on.

For industry, I build a saw mill , smelter, and grain farm in Cologne.  In Bremen I  build workshops and transport the iron ore and timber my sawmill and smelter produced in Colonge into making iron goods which I later use for  expedition trade and for use in my home town. The grain I produce is used for feeding the people in the winter or when the towns grains supply runs low, the people start to leave the town if they fear the town is running low on food.  The grain farm I usually only break even or sometimes take on a small loss of revenue but selling some the extra grain to cities experience famine turns the slight loss selling to the town, into a small overall profit.

In Gdansk, I build a brewery and grain farm, then ship timber from Cologne to the town for production of beer. The beer I use in my own town and send out on trading expeditions. The trading expedition, I acquire wine, pottery, cloth, and spices so I do not manufacture these. In Stockholm,  I use the warehouse as a storage area for unloading  and picking up of goods for ships serving the Stockholm area. I send a  cog convoy to pick up and deliver goods between my warehouses to keep my goods moving from an area where they is an abundance to an area where there is a shortage.

What I have learned from this set up is in Gdansk uses timber and grain to manufacturer beer. You can use the extra grain produced in town and sell it at a good profit especially in the winter time when there is a lot of cities experience famine. While it would be more profitable to produce your grain in Gdansk and forgo building a grain farm in Cologne because the goods cost more to produce in Cologne then in Gdansk if the town goes under siege you might loose your grain farms or while the town is in siege the production stops  and if this were to occur during the winter months this would affect your home town.  Also the league ever so often has mandatory boycotts and if this town was one of them, you could be fined for doing business with them, I have not tried the theory out to where if you could deliver to your warehouse and pick up your own goods if you could get away from it. I do know you cannot buy goods for your warehouse during a boycott.
