| Final Fantasy VII |
| Final Fantasy VII (rom NOT available) is possibly one of the best role playing games available. The story involves an energy company called Shinra that manufactures a condensed form of energy known as Materia, formed by extracting energy from the planet by Mako Reactors. The overall plot is excellent and very original, centering around a rebel group set to stop Shinra from killing the planet. As always, the Final Fantasy elements are here once again: a character named Cid, chocobos (with many fun uses), and the music. Chocobos are fully utilized in this game, better than any other Final Fantasy to date; they have to be caught (which makes for some fast actions during battle), they help as a quick ride from one point to another, they can be bred as an interesting sub-quest, and best of all they can be raced with. Speaking of races, Final Fantasy 7 probably has the indisputed best gameplay elements of any RPG. Square really went all-out when making this game -- not only is the battle system fun and easy to use (you have magic/summons and various other options via the Materia system), there are 7 exciting mini-games that rival real arcade games. These range from a strategy-sim (echoes of Final Fantasy Tactics?), chocobo and motorcycle racing, a snowboard simulation, and plenty of surprises to keep you interested for hours. If you haven't heard of Gold Saucer yet you soon will -- you won't be able to tear yourself away from it! Another very good point is the variety and personality of the characters. The silent, brooding Vincent; the energetic, happy-go-lucky Yuffie; and the solemn yet sofisticated and fun Tifa. A wide range of characters improves the gameplay immensly. This game set a new standard for RPGs and became the first truly immersive RPG for the Playstation console. |
