| Let's start off by stating that Final Fantasy 2 (ROM available)was never released in the US. Yes, you may have played Final Fantasy 2, but that was really Final Fantasy 4 in the series but renamed to FF2 in the US because it was the second game released in the US. Confused? I thought so. Go to the History section if you don't understand. I thoroughly enjoyed Final Fantasy 2 for the NES console. I played a translated ROM, so I got to read everything in English rather than stumble through the original Japanese game. The graphics are improved slightly, but noticeably, but the plot is MUCH better. We now have definable characters rather than just guys running around the world holding orbs or whatever. Cid and the Chocobos make their first appearance here, along with, of course, the famous chocobo theme song. There are 3 main characters in the game that stick with you the entire time, but the fourth party member switches from time to time to suit the plot. The real improvement in this game is in the plot. Granted, it's not the best of plots for a game, and couldn't rival even any of the SNES Final Fantasy games, but at least it's there. I won't spoil too much, but I'll say that this is the root of Final Fantasy 6 (3 in the US), involving a rebellion. Of course there are ups and downs to the plot, but after having to force my way through the incomprehensible labyrinths of Final Fantasy 1 without more than 2 lines of dialogue throughout that point of the game, this is very refreshing. Gameplay is a little different in this game than any other Final Fantasy, except maybe the Gameboy Legends. You gain abilities by what actions you take during battle. If you attack a lot, your attack power goes up. If you use magic often, your magic increases. I think you get the point; it's simple but effective. It's also pretty easy to cheat the system too (why not try to select FIGHT for all three characters, then before selecting anything for the fourth character, cancel the fight commands and do them again. Your attack power really increases pretty well after that). This Final Fantasy game is worth at least playing for a little while. It's undoubtedly better than Final Fantasy I, although not as good as its successors. I can honestly say that I'll probably replay the game one of these days, after I finish Final Fantasy Tactics, at least .... |
