Final Fantasy 3 (Rom Available) was unfortunately never released in the US, but thanks to the recent utilization of Nintendo emulation and translations, this third Final Fantasy for the NES system can now be played on your PC! This is the best Final Fantasy of the NES, and it's not hard to see why. For the first time Squaresoft made a Final Fantasy that was actually FUN to play (as opposed to being INTERESTING as Final Fantasy 2's plot was).

Just as Final Fantasy 2 introduced Chocobos and Cid to the Final Fantasy universe, this game introduced us to a variety of other elements, such as Moogles and the Fat Chocobo. The most noticeable changes are the graphic and music portions, and especially the gameplay (which I'll go into detail about later). The graphics are considerably improved over its predecessor, taking advantage of the NES console. The music is the same NES style that gets annoying after awhile, but for once we have separate boss themes and many more tunes than the previous two games, adding a little diversity to the score.

The game itself can be considered just a heavily improved version of Final Fantasy 1. The plot is nearly identical, the differences being that it's a little more in depth as far as NPCs and different situations. In fact, the plot of Final Fantasy 2 is actually superior. The fact that 4 youths (who are hardly characterized) are out to save the world by saving the crystals is the same as FF1, and would be further expanded on in Final Fantasy 5 later on. To the game's strong advantage is the fact that the gaming world is huge and features plenty of different straight-forward settings to minimize the frustrations of Final Fantasy 1 where you would wander through virtually indistinguishable labyrinths (different only by color!) with very little effect on the plot. Now, the labyrinths have been replaced by simple paths with a great deal of detail that range from sewers to caves to mansions.

The real accomplishment in this game is the gameplay. In Final Fantasy 1, you could choose your type of character to play through the game; Final Fantasy 3 takes it on giant step forward: the introduction to the job system that would be used  a little more effectively in Final Fantasy 5 and Tactics. As the plot progresses, you gain the options to change your "job" or character type depending on the number of ability points you have. You no longer have to go through the entire game with the same tired characters, but you can change them as you enter places that suit different or stronger character types. This makes some fun, often challenging strategies for you to work out.

Final Fantasy 3 is an excellent game that is not to be missed even by players whose tastes are more refined than Nintendo games. Unless you want to skip to Final Fantasy 5, the SNES game that makes the best use of the aspects of Final Fantasy 1 and 3, this game will definitely keep your interest. While obviously not as enjoyable as its sequels (no Final Fantasy games are, it seems...), you definitely don't want to play Final Fantasy 1 after playing this game .... Believe me, you'll hate FF1!
