Reviews

Extraordinary author and book

I am a huge fan of fantasy and have read dozens of books from many authors but after reading the same cliched plots time after time, I gave up on the genre for a long time--until I discovered Ruin Mist. I was immediately enchanted by the fantastic world and its characters. The world isn't filled with archectypical characters (ie boy wonders, missing heirs, heroes trudging off against a dark lord) and definitely doesn't follow the formulaic/cliched/overworked standard fantasy plotlines.

Whole world created in Ruin Mist

Not your average fantasy series. Its not driven by the same old cliches of central 'big bad guy', world transforming prophecy or boy goes off to save the world. It isn't chock full of meaningless magic zapping off every few pages or meaningless battles that serve no real purpose. Characterization are fleshed out and seem real. Stanek doesn't have one dimensional characters, ie the ultra good, the ultra bad who plod along. This is a human story and each character has different motivations. The world Stanek paints becomes more and more real.  Stanek bases his story in a medieval world. It is all very realistic without being overly graphic. I appreciate that. stanek's narrative is strong. He gives every scene in every chapter through a pov of a different character. The plots are masterfully interwoven, and often its like watching a painting come to life before your eyes. Stanek avoids the traps that befall many other authors, like repetitive prose, uses an economy of well phrased words to keep the story moving and the pace brisk.

Not your average fantasy...remember this is #1 of set

As anyone can guess from the multitude of other reviewers gushing with praise this is an absolutely amazing book, there is simply no other way to say it. I'm an avid fantasy reader but was becoming disappointed with the genre after reading so many awful books with no imagination and the same plot superimposed with different characters. Thankfully Stanek's renewed my faith. This is no book with just some all powerful rulers and villians who want to rule the world. It is an intricate weaving of characters, plots and world.   One of the greatest things about Stanek's writing is the characters. There aren't any one dimensional characters here. No purely evil or pure good. Please, please give this book a try. Anyone who can't find the joy in reading this book doesn't know good literature when it hits them over the head. Give it a try. The next book is out and doesn't follow the typical sequel slump, if anything it is better! The third book is supposed to be out early in 2003.

The best -- THE Star Wars of Fantasy!

Anyone who doesn't enjoy this book most likely does not understand the use of language. Some people may argue that Stanek created hollow characters, that is a falsity. He, in fact, created complex characters. They each have very different personalities and internal torment. Some characters are an exception to this because Stanek doesn't want you to know more about them than the other characters. Xith is one of these for certain. His personality is mysterious, and it would take away from the suprises in the story if it were any other way.  Stanek's powerful decription of the world of Ruin Mist gives reality to the story. Without it the story would lack individuality and it is the world that makes this so great in the first place.

Keeper Martin's Tale deserves its acclaim!

This review comes from a reader who has read classics from Dickens, Poe, Hawthorne, etc. as well as great modern sci-fi and fantasy books, but few compare to this. A learned reader should be intelligent enough to recognize the sheer genius of 'Keeper Martin's Tale'. Repleat with symbolism, the subtle incorporation of humanistic themes, the witty dialog, wonderful characters. Yet it is the simplicity of 'Keeper Martin's Tale', its accessibility to any reader, that gives this book its popularity.   It is my favorite book. In a world where each fantasy book keeps trying to be "bigger" than the last, this book is an exception. I recommended this book to my friends. They all read it, and liked it. In my opinion, if a reader derives no pleasure from 'Keeper Martin's Tale', it is the fault of the reader, not the book. People should know by now not to expect the usual fantasy drivel from Stanek. If they do, then they've been living under a rock. It is not Stanek's fault that few "readers" these days have the desire or capability to understand any literature that is not formulaic, predictable or hackneyed. 'Keeper Martin's Tale' is a great achievement, perhaps the greatest in a long time, certainly in fantasy, but perhaps even in all of fiction. To know 'Keeper Martin's Tale', you have to dare to believe.
