TESTIMONIAL'S
Comet Windmills
Catalogue No. 5
March 1921
The Australian Pastoral Company has over 100 Comets - all sizes, up to 30ft - on their properties in different parts of QLD.
Thousands of square miles of new country have been stocked by the Aust. Pastoral Co. during the past few years
and watered exclusively by Comet Windmill Plants, operating on sub-artesian bores.
'Warenda' Station, near Boulia, QLD, has about 40 Comet Mills, and most of them are of a large size.
'Oban' Station, Cloncurry, QLD, has about 22 Comet Mills mostly 27ft. and three are 35ft.Comets,
pumping from 400 to 500 feet deep.
Commonwealth Government have purchased 22 Comets (sixteen 24ft. and six 27ft.)
for the overland Stock Route in Northern Territory.
'Brunette Downs' in the Northern Territory has about 16 Comets, all of which are 27ft in size.
'Eldersie' Station, Winton, QLD, has about 20 Comets, of which the majority are 27ft. and 30ft.,
and pump from 400 to 500ft deep. C. J. Brabazon Esq., who is at present on 'Eldersie',
has purchased considerably over 100 Comet Mills for different during the last 10 years.
'Darr River Downs', Longreach, QLD, has about 30 Comets, nearly all of which are 24ft. in size.
'Mt Margaret' Quilpie, QLD, has nearly 20 Comets, mostly large sizes up to 30ft.

I have Comet windmill Pumping Plants - sizes 12ft. to 24ft. - erected on properties of Mr. Jowett's from one end of QLD
to the other, as many as 10 and 12 on the one place. It is many years since the first Comet was installed by us,
and every one we have is still in splendid working order. It gives me great pleasure,
therefore, to testify to the value they have been to us.
The main features are - effeciency in doing their work, the wheel turning in a slight breeze -
and the small amount of outlay required to keep them in order.
If everyone you have supplied has had the same amount of satisfaction out of the Comet as we have,
all I can say is that this make of Mill has been a very great boon to Queensland.

There are a large number of these in use on the Company's Queensland Stations, and I can state that after a careful comparison
of all the mills on the market at present date, we have given first place to the Comet.
It is light running, simple in construction, strongly built and cost of upkeep, practically nil -
a very satisfactory article and in my opinion an easy first.
A 14ft. Comet pumping from 39ft. watered 1000 bullocks and 2000 sheep for quite a long time,
and no auxiliary was near the well.
I have just seen a 24ft. Comet watering 2500 cattle on 'Mt Margaret' with a 3 inch pump, water standing at 59ft.,
and supply tank full, all the time I was there. During the Mackay cyclone, 2 years ago, 4 out of 14 other makes of mills
were wrecked at 'Kilcummin', these ranged up to 16ft. The 15 Comet Mills ranging from 12ft. to 27ft.,
and most of them on exposed sub-bores, came through without the slightest damage.

We have upwards of 50 Comet Mills on the various stations in QLD which are under are control.
My experience if same - which is confirmed by my various managers -
is that they are in every way the best mill on the market in Australian .
They are pumping at various depths from 40ft. to about 250ft.; they work in a wind which is almost imperceptible.
Some of these Mills are watering upwards of 15,000 sheep.
The tower is particularly strong; the Mills are of simple construction, and they do not get out of order.
the oiling arrangements are ample, only requiring attention about every month.
I have no hesitation in recommending Comet to anyone requiring cheap power for lifting water for stock or gardens.
The first Mill that you made was fixed by my Company on 'Vuna' station in 1910,
where for several years it watered about 14,000 sheep.
This Mill has cost nothing for repairs, and is still in good going order.

Re your Comet Windmills. I have purchased 55 of these mills from you.
They are working in various points of Central and Northern QLD, pumping at depths varying from 50ft. to 400ft.
The Mills are exceptionally strong, and work in the lightest breezes; this is particularly the case with the larger sizes.
I am now giving an order for 6 more of these mills (27ft. diameter), for pumping from deep sub-artesian bores.
I have not found any mill to equal the Comet for all-round efficiency, reliability and durability.

We have been using your Comet Mills and equipments since 1914, and they have given every satisfaction;
so much so, we have increased our number to 18 mills.
For heavy work and reliability, I think the Comet stands out alone, as all our bores are from 300ft. to 600ft. deep.
One 27ft. plant watered last year 8,000 wethers for 6 months, pumping from 512ft.
Another 22ft. Mill watered 3,000 sheep for the same period, pumping from a depth of 580ft., with a 2 inch pump.
Up to date the upkeep for these plants has been nil, and I would strongly recommend Comet to anyone using mills.

We have much pleasure in testifying to the satisfaction we have derived from the constant use of the Comet Mills
since you put them on the market many years ago.
We have 10 of these 22ft. mills on as many bores, pumping from 250ft. to 350ft. and can say truthfully,
that with ordinary care, these are most dependable, and the upkeep cost is inconsiderable.
In short, we are so satisfied with the Comet Mills, that we have no desire to experiment with other makes.
We should say that a Comet Mill, iron tank, and troughing (with patent ends for flushing)
is just about the last word in stock watering outfits.

I think I was one the first to use your Comet Windmills - about 1910, and since have purchased from you,
over 50 mills altogether, varying in sizes from 12ft. to 27ft. in diameter.
I am of the opinion that the Comet gives better all-round satisfaction than any other make I have yet seen,
and I have no hesitation in recommending the Comet to anyone requiring an up-to-date pumping plant.
They are particularly strong, and the lightest of winds will work them.
I might mention that I had one of your 27ft. mills lifting water with a 4 inch pump at a depth of 500ft, with no problems.
I have several Comet Mills on my own property, and contemplate purchasing 2 more very soon.

'Lammermoor', Prairre, NQLD.
May 17, 1920.
I have had your Comet Mills working for about 10 years. Their Pumps are at various depths from 250ft. to 350ft.
In one paddock a 24ft. mill with a 3 inch pump with a lift of 265ft., during the heat of last year
(which was one of the driest seasons 'Lammermoor' ever experienced) watered 1,000 breeders;
the auxiliary engine power being only worked about 10 days during the whole period.
The Comet Mill requires very little attention, and costs nothing for repairs.
One of the Comet Mills worked continuously for 3 years, and we never had to lift the pump during that time.
I have had experience of many makes of mills, and have no hesitation in stating that the Comet is in my opinion easily the best.

I must admit that your Comet Mills are doing excellent work and have exceeded my expectations.
The short stroke and Direct Acting Mills are evidently superior to
the Geared Mills when it comes to raising large quantities of water.
One cannot get away from obvious facts when demonstrated by
2 mills working on the same conditions as to lift, pump, wind, etc.
(Sgd) W. C. Miller, Manager.
The Coreena Pastoral Co. Pty. Ltd.
I feel it my duty to personally write to you about the success I have had with
Comet Mills during the last dry time in the West. All my surface water dried up and only for the Comets
I would have been stranded for water. They never failed me, some of them were watering 1200 head;
and although I had one of your pumping heads and engines, I did not have to use it.
The 20ft. Comet Mill I have here at Toowoomba kept my home green and all plant life revelled in the moisture.
I am not sorry for discarding other makes of mills and erecting Comets, they are no trouble.
Many have heard me say that the Comet is not a windmill but a wind-engine and the only one worth having.
I could not write too much praise.

(Extract of letter)
The Comet Mills I have - three 24ft. and two 16ft., are doing splendid work, the former on sub-artesian bores.
Please send me an instruction book on erecting, as I have one still to go up.
