Who are the best players ever?   September 5, 2000. A formula I developed to determine the all-time greats, along with results and discussion. Y2K Update, October 3, 2000. HOF Update, January 13, 2001. Politics of Glory Update, January 25, 2001. Y2K1 Update, February 18, 2002.

Distribution of 3Play Scores   January 26, 2001. Just a little something I whipped up because I was bored one day. Kinda interesting though.. More data added, March 26, 2001.

How does changing leagues affect hitters?   October 10, 2000. "Experts" claim that a player must "learn the pitchers" and in this way should be less productive. I investigated this claim and found that, if anything, players actually benefited from changing leagues.

Does pitching win championships?   August 28, 2000. I have researched this topic and found evidence to suggest that pitching and hitting are equally important. Park Effects Data, September 6, 2000.

All-Star Break Complete Standings: Sandbox CNN/Si Yahoo #1 Yahoo #2 Yahoo #3 Yahoo #4

Graphical Wrap-Up - Overall, I was disappointed with my season. I only had one championship. I finished 2nd in 3 leagues that I had a very good chance of winning. I just did not put much time into my team until the middle of the summer, and it cost me. Next year I expect to have more free time.

Sandbox Full Count Fantasy Baseball (Fantasy Point) - Roster. Awesome pitching, mediocre hitting. Some better decisions could have won this. I never could find a good Catcher. I did not come close to using all my Outfield games due to injuries. Adam Dunn & Jimmy Rollins had horrible second-halves. I wasted Relief games for about 2 months with Keith Foulke. On the bright side, I had 2 of the 3 best closers in Gagne & Koch. My pitching was solid if unspectacular after Randy Johnson. I somehow managed to lose to a guy that lost about 200 points worth of pitching by not using all his games.

CNN/Si Fantasy Baseball (Fantasy Point, Head-to-Head) - Roster. I led the league in points, but I lost the championship round 347.7 to 347.3 because Brian Giles somehow ended up on my bench, leaving me one player short. I dominated Hitting by 500 points and only missed out in Pitching by about 50 points. There no big surprise hitters, but the huge years by Gagne, Lowe, and Mike Williams made me a truly dominant team. I led the league in points 11 of 26 weeks, meaning my record was only 5-10 when I did not lead the league. By contrast, the player with the best record went 15-7 when not leading the league. This makes the championship loss a little hard to swallow, but I've certainly learned my lesson.

CBS Sportsline Fantasy Baseball (Fantasy Point, Head-to-Head, Mid-Season) - Roster. Good team that got the results. First in points, first in record, first in playoffs. My hitters weren't dominant, but I had plenty of firepower (Helton, Nomar, Sosa). Pitching was outstanding (Unit, Halladay, Gagne, Guardado). I even got the bad end of a trade by giving up Lowe & Vidro for Glavine & R. Alomar.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball #1 (Rotisserie, 21 total categories) - Roster. This is just sad. I lost to a player who did not even check his team after April. Only one other player even checked after May. This league just had too many statistics. I won the league if you look only at 5x5 statistics, but I lost because my hitters finished last in Errors, Strikeouts, and Triples. That's still not a good excuse for losing a 5-team league to a bunch of dead players.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball #2 (Rotisserie Public, standard 5x5) - Roster. Not a very good team. I was closer to 10th than I was to 2nd. My pitchers were good, especially with nabbing Tim Hudson and Jarrod Washburn as Free Agents. My hitters were very poor. Only 2 regulars hit over .300 (Helton & Sweeney), and my power numbers were lacking as well.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball #3 (Rotisserie, 21 total categories) - Roster. I had strong hitting (Nomar, Thome, Kent, Beltran, Burrell) and excellent relieving (Guardado, Gagne, Isringhausen), but I struggled to find quality starters after Mike Mussina. He was the only starter to be on my roster the entire season. I picked up good players like Ramon Ortiz & Damian Moss a little too late to capitalize on all their good starts. I also got hurt in some stupid categories like Singles, Batting K's, and Pitching Walks. I would have been 2nd in a 5x5 league.

Yahoo Fantasy Baseball #4 (Rotisserie, 14 total categories) - Roster. This is pretty similar to Yahoo #3. Hitting not quite as good (Sosa, Nomar, Thome, Bagwell). Pitching better and more weighted to the starters (Halladay, Washburn, Nomo, Guardado). This league had 4 extra scoring categories, and they were reasonable. So I won't complain this time.

Graphical Wrap-Up

Yahoo Fantasy Basketball #1 - Roster. My team was very consistent except for finishing last in free throw percentage. I had one true superstar in Kevin Garnett and alot of good players. A second superstar probably would have put me in first place.

Yahoo Fantasy Basketball #2 - Roster. This league used fantasy points and had no game limit. Basically I won because I played the most games by a margin of about 60 over 2nd place. I get credit for persistence, but I don't consider this to be a great accomplishment.

Yahoo Fantasy Basketball #3 - Roster. I was never in real contention. Perhaps my biggest mistake was hanging on to Jordan the entire season. If I would have traded him for a star under 50 years old, I think I could have finished 2nd.

Yahoo Fantasy Basketball #4 - Roster. Very similar team to Yahoo #3. Poor in free throw percentage, 3-pointers, and turnovers. Solid in the major counting stats (points, rebounds, assists). The break-out years of Jermaine O'Neal and Wally Szczerbiak were big positives, but the injuries to Chris Webber (early in the season) and Lamar Odom (never came back from injuries) probably cost me a run at the championship.

Graphical Wrap-Up - After a strong start (73% after week 7), I only managed 3 weeks of winning two-thirds of my games, which I consider to be a minimum for a succesful season.

Sandbox Fantasy Football - This team had no weaknesses, but at the same time it lacked any superstars or break-out players. As a result, I was barely average.

CNN/Si Fantasy Football - This team was just average. The problem was, the site did not save the changes I made to my draft order. As a result, I got the default settings, which are horrible. If my rankings would have gotten through, I should have been one of the top 3 teams.

Yahoo Fantasy Football #1 - I was in 1st for most of the regular season, and I had a chance to finish first until I lost my final game. If I could have avoided a first-round upset, I possibly could have won the league since I had good games in the consolation rounds.

Yahoo Fantasy Football #2 - This team was solid in a very competitive league. The league champs were only 8-5-1, so I was only one-half game behind, along with 3 other teams. In all, 6 of 10 teams were in first or within one game. I feel like a typical year out of Eddie George would have won the league for me. I also lost Edgerrin James to injury.

Yahoo Fantasy Football #3 - I was 2nd in the regular season, but managed to win the playoffs. The keys to this team were the huge seasons for Terrell Owens and Ahman Green, along with another strong year from Donovan McNabb.

Yahoo Fantasy Football #4 - I won the regular season despite losing 2 of the last 4. In the playoffs, I lost the first round by only 4 points. Had I won, I would have easily won the championship because I outscored the champ by over 20 points in the championship week. This was a very good team that just had bad luck in the playoffs.
