WATER TABLE
The Everglades has been altered such that 2/3 of the area depends on the rain received by 1/3 of the original watershed. The amount of water the Everglades receives is only one half the original amount; there is not enough water to sustain the ecological systems. The original Everglades also maintained a higher water level for a greater period of time. In the dry season, the original, greater volume of water would allow a gradual decrease in water level. Now, with less available water, the water that does collect in impounded ponds is not sufficient for this gradual decrease in water level. (2)
