MOTIONS

Motions are policy proposals which are discussed and debated at OUSA Conference.  In 2004, two motions brought forward by the Southern Europe Regional Forum, that OUSA has agreed to adopt as policy, state:

  1. This Association deplores the University's insistence on a single monopolistic computer platform, and asks the University to adopt an open platform approach in keeping with its policies of openness and equality.

  2. This Association urges the University to put measures into place so that students may pay their fees, whether in full or by means of OUSBA, in Euros without incurring excessive bank charges for currency exchange.

The Executive Committee of the Open University Students' Association will now try to pressure the Open University to also adopt these policies.

If you have any ideas for a motion, please contact Sara J. L. Hatcher, Executive Committee Member for Southern Europe

2003/2004:

OUSA NI did not bring forth any motions for Conference 2004 but will support all motions submitted by Southern Europe

2002/2003:

OUSA NI did not bring forth any motions for Conference 2004 but will support all motions submitted by Southern Europe

2001/2002:

Motion 1
Aim
See motion
Motion
The Association urges the University to guarantee course fees for a minimum period of X years and, in the event of any change to course fees structure, notify immediately all students involved in such changes.

Motion 2
Aim
To avoid unnecessary financial difficulties for students and provide the best financial assistance during study.
Motion
The Association urges the Open University to provide funding or interest free financial credit for those students who demonstrate that they do not have the means to continue their studies in the event of increases in course fees.

Motion 3
Aim
Improve and guarantee quality of service
Motion
The Association urges the University to deduct from course fees those services (e.g. tutorials, full-time reps, mentors, inadequate postal services) that for whatever reason are not provided to the standard necessary to prepare the student and allow him/her to satisfactorily complete the course.

Motion 4
Aim
Understand (better) student needs and study conditions.
Motion
The Association urges the University to conduct a complete survey concerning the financial conditions (income, benefits etc.) of students in order to ensure that fees correspond to the real financial capabilities of students and therefore avoid situations where OU students are discriminated simply by assuming that they are financially autonomous and self-sufficient to incur high fees and continuously increasing fees.

Motion 5
Aim
To ensure that all courses that students have taken or are taking are considered valid for the named degree profile chosen by the student. This is to avoid circumstances where students have taken or are taking course(s) that have subsequently been judged inappropriate for a specific named degree rpofile.
Motion
The Association believes that in the event that a student is taking or has taken a course that is no longer considered appropriate (i.e. judged inadequate by an external advisor or body) for a specific named degree profile the University is not only obliged to act appropriately e.g.. provide written confirmation and explanation to the affected student but also offer adequate compensation. Compensation alternatively (at the discretion of the student) maybe monetary (total or partial reimbursement) or, choice of an alternative course or courses with the same credit standing at no extra cost.

Motion 6
Aim
To ensure that students incur no extra charges (fees or otherwise) simply because the University has decided to make mandatory on-line connection for all students.
Motion
This Association recognises the OU's plan to ensure that all students are on-line as from 2003-4 but also calls upon the University to guarantee that this does not imply an increase in student fees or cause unnecessary discrimination and therefore exclusion from distant study.

What IS a motion anyway?

Motions are policy proposals which are discussed and debated at OUSA Conference.

In a nutshell, it's something YOU as a student wants OUSA to pressure the OU to adopt.

One successful motion was the adoption of named degrees.
