The Art of Contemplative Prayer by Father Melvin Doucette
At prayer that morning in June 1999 Jesus told me these words, �Something special is going to happen to you today.� I wondered what these words meant and I did not have to wait long to find out. At about 9:00 am I began to see the form of a book in my imagination. When I closed my eyes, I could see white clouds floating across the sky blue cover of a book whose title, written in gold letters, was "The Art of Contemplative Prayer." This picture remained with me for two days and during this time Jesus urged me to write this book.
This book deals with our relationship with Jesus. Through contemplative prayer we have an intimate and loving relationship with our Lord and Savior. This prayer calls for discipline and an open heart. We must find time every day to be alone with Jesus and to be receptive to all the graces and gifts He wants to give us. Jesus wants to lead us along the spiritual path on a journey of growth with Him. He is going to take away any load we are carrying, heal us of any wound or hurt we have, and teach us our true priorities in life. As we contemplate Jesus and open our hearts to Him, we are going to find the peace, the joy and the strength to live each day with Him. Never again are we going to be alone to face the sorrow, the pain and the struggle of life.
I narrate in the book some of my religious experiences. I received a special call from Jesus that is always with me. All the details are in the book. I include a few pages of the diary I kept during my thirty-day retreat in Jerusalem. These pages deal with the Passion of Our Lord and how He made me relive this great drama of our Salvation. For two weeks, I was undergoing the Passion with Him; and more accurately, Jesus was undergoing His Passion in my heart. I experienced every moment of the Passion: His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Way of the Cross, His Crucifixion and Death on the Cross, the burial in the tomb, and the Resurrection on Easter Day. When Jesus told me to write this book, He also wanted me to include some of the experiences I had in prayer. This book is for everyone. Any person can have a similar relationship with the Lord, and this book shows in a simple way, how this can come about.
