Bonum vinum
laetificat cor hominis
[Latin]

- Psalms 104:15

Welcome to the largest ongoing permanent Kashrut conference in the world.

Kosher markings on a product are sometimes misleading. There are many reasons for this problem:

  • A product that is certified kosher in one region may not be certified in another region
  • Certification may have been removed from the product even though it continues to be sold with Kosher markings
  • A letter "P" on a product could mean either "Parve" or "Passover"

and much more.

This information is usually not readily available to the individual Kosher consumer.

Travelers, or those who move to new areas, may also have difficulty identifying or locating Kosher foods.

Kosher homes clearly need a resource for information about kosher products. That is why the Kosher group was created.

My hechsher is better than your hechsher

A hechsher certifies that a food item is kosher.

With the proliferation of hechshers (or hechsherim), it is very easy to get into discussions or arguments about which one is better, or more strict, or meets more requirements.

Worse, some of these discussions may be based on hearsay from others.

Many people ask about the relative reliability of the Rabbanut, Rabbanut Mehadrin, and the various Badatzs in Israel. Similar issues arise with other issues, such as the use of Chalav Akum versus Chalav Yisrael in the United States.

There is no doubt that these are extremely important issues.

However, they go beyond a blithe statement about a stringency - a Chumra.

Kosher Forum only posts messages that relate to the positive, factual issues about any supervisory organization. The forum does not post Lashon Hara or issues that could lead to Lashon Hara in responses.

Although the Kosher Forum will not take a stand on which hechsher is "better", we will provide the necessary information so that you can make an informed decision.

The specific Hashgacha that is appropriate for you cannot be discussed on the Kosher group - or on any other public group, and certainly not on the Internet. Only your own Rabbi can provide a definitive statement about the hechsher that is best for you.

Summary:

Our Kosher Forum will give you the facts. It will help clarify the issues in your head.

Your Rabbi will give you the psak - the decision regarding your own behavior.
