| Then God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters." |

| The word "firmament" means "heavens." It literally refers to "something stretched out." A look at Jeremiah 10:12 gives confirmation of this. "He has established the world by His wisdom, And has stretched out the heavens at His discretion." Job has this to say in Job 26:10, "He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness." Now let's take a look at Psalm 136:5-6. "To Him who by wisdom made the heavens, For His mercy endures forever; 6: To Him who laid out the earth above the waters, For His mercy endures forever. God's infinate wisdom is shown through His creation as well as through His Word. Isaiah 40:22 says, "It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in. "The circle" refers to the horizon or the hemisphere over the earth. God sits above this circle and He should never be confused with His creation. |
