The largest shooting club
on Osteroey is "Osteroey
Shooting Club", previously
called "Gjerstad Shooting
Club". In 1899 "Gjerstad
Shooting Club" was
established and in 1999
the club celebrated its
100-year birthday. January 1st 2000, the club changed it name to "Osteroey Shooting Club". The reason for the name change was that another shooting club in Norway (in Aust-Agder) shared the same name. Since the members of the Osteroey based club mostly is getting its members from the island itself, they decided to change their name.
"Osteroey Shooting Club" has their shooting range at Kleppevaagen, which is located approximately 3 km from Tysse (between Fotlandsvaag and Tysse). The shooting range was opened 5 years ago. The members conducted all construction work during their leisure time. In these days they are busy sound proofing the shooting range as much as possible. Prior to the opening of the shooting range at Kleppevaagen, the members used a shooting range at Fossen in Lonevaag. During the winter months, the members are using an indoor facility at Osteroey Middle School located at Hatland.
The "Osteroey Shooting Club" board consists of the following members; Bjoern Ove Aakre (chairman), Erling Gjerstad, Egil Raknes, Leif-Olav Tepstad, Oddvar Hannisdal, and Arthur Kaarstad (board members).
"Osteroey Shooting Club" has shown very good results over the years. At the national shooting competitions this year (2000), Arthur Kaarstad was the most successful member of the club. He was shooting at target no. 7 during the finals as a member of "Kongelaget". Further, he did win the "military trophy" and therefore has a chance to keep this trophy permanently if he wins future national shooting competition events. He also received a medal during the field shooting competition.
