| The following are the projects that the Osborne PTSA would like to support during this upcoming school year. There are a number of these that support the five-year School Improvement Action Plan directly and many more indirectly. The focus of the PTSA organization this year will be to increase stakeholder's participation in the activities of the school as they add value to the student's high school career. The theme for this year will be Open a New Window ... and is reflected in several different activities suggested for this year. We want to become the premier partner in education for this school. Following the initiatives is the progress that was made in that area during the past year. Of the 25 objectives undertaken, progress was recognized in 18 of the areas. A brief synopsis of each of these follows (in alphabetical order) 1. Benevolence -Gather information from various sources pertaining to difficult situations in the Osborne Family and acknowledge such in an appropriate manner. -Coordinate 'Caught You Doing something Good' cards to send to deserving individuals. Were able this past year to only scratch the surface of this initiative. The amount that was accomplished resulted in good benefits to the individuals. Hope to foster this initiative during the 2001-2002 School Year. 2. Career Day and Job Fairs Job Fairs - Organize two job fairs at school, one in late Fall for holiday employment and one in late Spring for Summer or full-time employment - Arrange for local companies to come to school - Communicate that students will need a resume to be considered for these positions Career Days - Have Career Days periodically throughout the year - Get people to come and talk to classes about numerous careers explaining the pros and cons of the particular job and vocational field; and to discuss the specific education or specific training needed to be successful in tht career -Make arrangements to video presentations provided to classes to allow other classes to view them and develop a library of these presentations. Although some initial research was completed on this task, it remained untouched at the end of the year, but will be attempted againg during the 2001-02 School Year. 3. Charter School Application/ School Council Initiation -Collect information from a variety of resources on charter schools -Put together a committee of school and community stakeholders to assimilate and analyze the information. -Develop a program that will result in the submittal of a charter school application, if deemed appropriate, by the end of the 2000-2001 School Year. -Work with school and county representatives in getting a School Council (part of the New Georgia Education Reform Act) at Osborne as soon as possible. After discussions with school and community ledership, was determined that the most effective approach for Osborne was to concentrate on the development of a School Council versus the Charter School. Requests to the County were made concerning the formation of a School Council, however, we were not chosen in the initial round of School Councils for the county. During the 2001-2002 School Year, efforts will focus on forming the intent of a School Council, getting parents, teachers, and community business leaders involved in some of the decision making of the school. 4. Community Music Program - Organize a group of high school aged students or older individuals who enjoy music and provide opportunities for growth. This may include either singing or playing an instrument - Establish contacts with th OPTF (Osborne Prevention Task Force) and the Osborne Alumni Club to determine mutual interest in this activity - Work with school personnel, requesting assistance, where practical - Coordinate local performances if desired to build camaraderie in the Osborne community and to provide a positive force to the local area, recognizing music as a universal common ground This initiative was not worked on this past year. We do plan to try again during the 2001-2002 School Year. 5. Courtyard - Develop a plan to construct a coutyard for students at Osborne, giving preference to Seniors for use. - Explore ways to fund project. - Have plans approved by school and county personnel. - Research other school and commercial courtyards so the design is of particular interest and importance to the Osborne community. In discussing this concept with the community, there was interest stirred. Landscape architects met with our principal, Dr. US Davidson, and progress was made. Since the school is preparing for a substantial building addition/renovation during the next 12 - 24 months, actually creating the courtyard was postponed until the all of the other construction decisions are made. The architect has plans of the school, and has been designing a type of courtyard that will be put in place at a later date. Students will have the opportunity to be involved in the final planning of the courtard. Activity on this project will depend on the activity associated with construction of the buildings at the school. |
