The Port Tobacco one room schoolhouse is truly a small one room school. In 1876, it was built north of the Port Tobacco village. For over 150 years, Port Tobacco has been one of the busiest ports. This schoolhouse was destroyed by a fire on August 3 which happened to be on a Wednesday night. No one has figured out how long ago the schoolhouse was built but the estimate is as early as 1872 or as late as 1876. They do know the Port Tobacco schoolhouse was used for 77 years. White students were able to attend this school from 1876 to 1924. From 1924 to 1953, the schoolhouse allowed black students to attend also. Eventually, the board of education sold the building and its land to Frank Button Wade in 1959. The Wade family gave the school to the Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco for a period of 40 years before it renewed the lease. In 1989, the town of Tobacco made this an historical district. To tell a little about the schoolhouse and how it was built, it was timber framed, had wood shingles. Also, a ramp now leads to the entrance door. Last but not least, a platform at the front of the room was built based on “ghost markings”. In 1994, the Port Tobacco schoolhouse was reopened to share its historical remembrances. The Babe Ruth Museum is located in Baltimore, Maryland. The Museum is where Babe Ruth started his childhood. His grandparents owned this building when Babe was only a boy. The museum has lots of photos and film highlights. It also has everything you want to know about Babe Ruth and baseball. This Museum is the official Orioles Museum too. It has a lot of information about the best baseball players ever, some of them are Lou Gehrig, Wee Willie Keeler, and Jammie Foxx. Some of the later heroes are Cal Ripken Jr., Ken Griffey, Mark Mc Gwire, and Sammy Sosa, the last one to mention is Barry Bonds. The museum is close to home of the Baltimore Orioles.
