O P I The Bus System
In Jerusalem (and most of Israel) the bus company is called “Egged”.
When taking a local bus, you can either pay for that one ride only (which costs 4.80 shekels), pay for a kartis’ya which is a bus card pass that gives you 11 rides (known as “clicks” because each driver clicks a number on the bus pass with a hole puncher) for 48.00 shekels, or buy a monthly pass (called a chofshi chodshi) which gives you an unlimited number of rides for 192.00 shekels. The monthly pass only pays if you take at least 2 busses a day (something your Rebbeim will not like). All prices are adult fares. Youth fares are less.
Hint 1: If you pay for one ride only, save that little receipt stub that the driver gives you, as sometimes special Egged workers come on the bus to check these tickets (or that you have a clicked “kartis’ya or appropriate “chofshi chodshi”).
Hint 2: If you buy a “chofshi chodshi” and do not sign your name and identity (or passport) number by the 7th of the month, one of these Egged checkers can legally take it away from you. It is highly recommended that you fill out this information the day you buy this monthly bus pass.
All of the above is paid for on the bus. The driver gives change.
