The Pillars of Islam

Witness: Believers must repeat three times "There is no God but God, and Mohammed is his messenger"

Prayer: Muslims are expected to perform ritual prayers five times a day. After a ceremonial washing symbolizing purity, prayers are performed at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, evening, and at nightfall. Friday noon prayers are often performed at a local mosque (Muslim house of worship).

Almsgiving: Muslims are expected to give 2.5% of their annual income to the poor. Additional generosity is also encouraged.

Fasting: The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is the month of Ramadan. During this month, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during daylight hours. Travelers, soldiers, pregnant women and the ill are exempt, but are expected to make up the missed days at a later time.

Pilgrimage: Muslims who are financially and physically able are required to make a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca once during their lives.
