Sports are taken very seriously in Tunisia. Evidence of this can be found in Tunisia's strong football performance in recent Africa Cup series and the Tunisian teams participation in the recent World Cup.

Tunisia will be the host for the 2001 Mediterranean Games which will include 22 countries in a wide variety of sports.

Sports are a passion that extends deep into the countryside. Even the smallest village will have a football pitch, and boys everywhere can be found playing football in the streets. The Tunisian passion for competition extends beyond football though, as the national handball, volleyball and basketball teams are also well respected. There is even a Baseball Federation representing ten teams.
