Welcome!

If you (or your child) are in one of Mrs. Oka's Math classes at Radford High School, then you are in the right place! This site was created for the sole purpose of helping students and parents obtain important information about our class, mainly dealing with homework and upcoming events, such as exams. This can be extremely helpful if you are absent from class.

For those of you who wish to learn a little bit more about me, my name is Mrs. Maria Oka and I am an alumni of Radford High School (Go Rams!). I attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and graduated in four years with my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. After taking a year off on the mainland, I returned to UH and earned my Post-Baccalaurate Certificate in Secondary Education. The 2008-2009 school year marks the seventh year of my teaching career, having spent all of it here at Radford. I am happy that I have been given the chance to give back to my school and its community. My personal classroom philosophy is that learning cannot take place unless there is a safe and positive learning environment, therefore, adherence to the class rules is extremely important. I also make sure I am always available to any student that needs help, whether it be before or after school, during recess, or by appointment at lunch. My hope is that all of my students will feel comfortable enough during the year to come see me, regardless of the situation.

First Offense: Warning
Second Offense: Student Conference with Mrs. Oka
Third Offense: Stay in for recess to discuss an action plan; a call made to parent/guardian

Homework:

Expect homework to be assigned EVERYDAY.
Homework is an integral part of each math lesson. It must be done on a daily basis if maximum learning is to take place. Homework is a learning experience that reinforces the concepts presented in class.

Homework Must Always...

1. Be completed and turned in on time
2. Be in pencil
3. Have your Name/Period/Date in the Upper Right Corner
4. Be in Power Homework format
5. Have the assignment title listed at the top
6. Have the original problems written out
7. Have work shown, if possible
8. Use complete sentences, if applicable
9. Have problems that were done on the board

Course Description :   Algebra 2A / 2B   (ACCN: MA50 / MA60)

This course extends the concepts and skills studied in Algebra 1B. Includes systems of equations and inequalities, exponential and logarithmic functions, complex numbers, sequences, and series. To enroll in this course, there is a prerequisite of C in Algebra 1B and consent of an instructor. This course is recommended for students who have successfully completed Geometry.

Absences and Tardies
If you have an excused absence, you are responsible for making up the work you miss. Check the board for the assignments. You have one more day than the number of days you were absent to make up any assignments. You will have to make arrangements to make up any missed quizzes or tests within a week's time.
Failure to make up work will result in a zero for the work.
For unexcused absences, the RHS attendance policy will be enforced.
If you walk in the door after the bell has started ringing, you are tardy. LOCKOUT will be enforced.

Grading Procedures
Grades are distributed as follows:

A 90 - 100%
B 80 - 89%
C 70 - 79%
D 60 - 69%
F 00 - 59%
40% - Exams
35% - Quizzes / POWs
25% - Assignments

**Do not ask me about your grade during class time**
Scores will be recorded into my grade book and most papers will then be returned to you.
Computer updates of your grades will be posted at the beginning of every week.

You are graded in the following areas:

Homework: Homework is an integral part of each math lesson. It must be done on a daily basis if maximum learning is to take place. Homework is a learning experience that reinforces the concepts presented in class.

  • Expect homework to be assigned EVERYDAY. Classwork may also be assigned as well. The assignments will either be problems from the book, or on worksheets, and can earn a grade of 5 points. We will review the assignments at the start of class.
  • All assignments are due when collected. If the assignment is not turned in at that time it will be considered late.
  • All work must be done in pencil. Work done in pen will result in a lower grade.
  • Correct heading is required on every assignment: Name, Period, & Date in the Upper Right Corner; assignment name on the the top line.
  • Show Work for all problems; copy the problem and circle the final answer.
  • Please write legibly.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at least once a week and may be unannounced. They will cover any previous material from class and you should prepare yourself such that there may be a quiz everyday.

Exams: You will be given an exam for every chapter we cover and a cumulative exam at the end of each quarter. We will cover approximately 2-3 chapters a quarter.

POWs:  "Problem of the Week" assignments involve concepts that we have learned in class and apply them to a word problem of sorts.   This problem requires students to not only solve it, but to clearly write out their explanations and analysis.   Writing has become an important aspect in math education, and as such, the POWs will carry the same weight as 10 homework assignments.   There will be about 1-2 POWs per quarter.

Extra Credit: Opportunities will be given regularly throughout this course. The main source of extra credit is through insurance, where you pay for credit with your own time. 15 minutes = 1 stamp. 3 stamps = 1 point.   See pamphlet for details.   All extra credit must be turned in no later than 1 week prior to the end of the quarter.   Extra credit can add a maximum of 2% to your grade.

Calculator**
**A graphing calculator (ex.TI-83) is recommended, especially if you are planning on continuing on to Trigonometry and Calculus.

This course should provide you with many challenges and chances to grow. I have confidence that you will all do well and succeed this school year. Just work hard and do you best and the rewards will follow!
