Course Description :   Algebra 1A / 1B   (ACCN: MA30 / MA40)

Topics include the real number systems, first degree equations and inequalities in one and two variables, products and factors in polynomials, quadratic equations and graphs. This course is the beginning of the math sequence, and therefore does not have any prerequisites. It is required of all incoming freshmen.

Syllabus: (word doc)

In class, you will focus on the General Learner Outcomes (GLO's) throughout the year.
Every student will learn to:
- Take responsibility for one's own learning.
- Work well with others.
- Engage in complex thinking and problem solving.
- Recognize and produce quality performance and quality products.

Classroom Rules
1. Respect everyone and everything in this classroom.
2. Please enter the room quietly and begin work.
3. Be prepared with all needed materials.
4. Raise your hand and be recognized before you speak.
5. Obey all school rules.

Daily
Before entering the classroom, please remove your hat. Please take care of any miscellaneous business (eg., pencil sharpening, getting forms signed) before the bell rings. There will almost always be some kind of work posted on the board and you are to be in your assigned seat and working on the assignment when the bell rings. You are also to have all your needed supplies and homework ready on your desk to be checked for your Daily Grade.

Absences and Tardies
If you have an excused absence, you are responsible for making up the work you miss. Check the board for the assignments. You have one more day than the number of days you were absent to make up any assignments. You will have to make arrangements to make up any missed quizzes or tests within a week's time.
Failure to make up work will result in a zero for the work.
For unexcused absences, the RHS attendance policy will be enforced.
If you walk in the door after the bell has started ringing, you are tardy. LOCKOUT will be enforced.

Grading Procedures
Grades are distributed as follows:

A 90 - 100%
B 80 - 89%
C 70 - 79%
D 60 - 69%
F 00 - 59%
40% - Exams
25% - Quizzes / POWs
25% - Homework / Classwork
10% - Daily Grade/Notebooks

**Do not ask me about your grade during class time**
Scores will be recorded into my grade book and most papers will then be returned to you.
Computer updates of your grades will be posted at the beginning of every week.

You are graded in the following areas:

Homework: Homework is an integral part of each math lesson. It must be done on a daily basis if maximum learning is to take place. Homework is a learning experience that reinforces the concepts presented in class.

  • Expect homework to be assigned EVERYDAY. Classwork may also be assigned as well. The assignments will either be problems from the book, or on worksheets, and can earn a grade of 5 points. We will review the assignments at the start of class.
  • All assignments are due when collected. If the assignment is not turned in at that time it will be considered late.
  • All work must be done in pencil. Work done in pen will not be accepted.
  • Correct heading is required on every assignment: Name, Period, & Date in the Upper Right Corner; assignment name on the the top line.
  • Show Work for all problems; copy the problem and circle the final answer.
  • Please write legibly.
  • Homework Rubric:
Score
Attributes
5
All (or almost all) problems assigned are attempted with work shown.
4
Most problems assigned are attempted with work shown.
3
At least half of the problems assigned are attempted. (Anything less than half will be returned to be redone and will be graded as late when turned in again.)
OR
Late work with all (or almost all) problems attempted.
2
Late work with most problems attempted.
1
Late work with at least half of the problems attempted.
0
Any work less than half done, or not turned in.
**All homework earns points regardless of being right or wrong. Homework is for practicing while quizzes and exams are for grading accuracy.

Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a lowered grade.
You have only 2 weeks to turn in any late work.

Notebooks: All students will be required to take notes in a notebook. At least once every chapter, notebooks will be collected, checked and graded. Notes should be properly labeled according to the chapter, section, and topic. I will be looking for specific items such as formulas, definitions, and examples, in addition to other items of importance discussed in class. Pay attention and keep your notes up-to-date.

Daily Grade: You will be given a daily grade worth 5 points everyday. Here is how you can earn the 5 points:

1 pt. - Have a pencil ready
1 pt. - Have your notebook and/or paper
1 pt. - Bring your textbook (unless otherwise instructed)
2 pts - Appropriate behavior:
Be in your seat when the bell rings, Be attentive (not disruptive or sleeping) during a lesson, No other inappropriate behavior as judged by the teacher

If you are absent, you will be excused from the day's grade. However, please note that the fewer days you are present, the more each missing point can hurt your grade. All the more reason to be prepared!

Quizzes: Quizzes will be given at least once a week and may be unannounced. They will cover any previous material from class and you should prepare yourself such that there may be a quiz everyday.

Exams: You will be given an exam for every chapter we cover and a cumulative exam at the end of each quarter. We will cover approximately 2-3 chapters a quarter.

POWs: "Problem of the Week" assignments involve concepts that we have learned in class and apply them to a word problem of sorts. This problem requires students to not only solve it, but to clearly write out their explanations and analysis. Writing has become an important aspect in math education, and as such, the POWs will carry the same weight as a quiz. There will be about 2 POWs per quarter.

Extra Credit: Opportunities will be given regularly throughout this course. The main source of extra credit is through insurance, where you pay for credit with your own time. 15 minutes = 1 stamp. 3 stamps = 1 point.   See pamphlet for details.   All extra credit must be turned in no later than 1 week prior to the end of the quarter.   Extra credit can add a maximum of 2% to your grade.

Materials needed for classes (items may be added throughout the year):

*Paper *Pencils (at least 2) *Notebook
*Calculator *Straight edge

This course should provide you with many challenges and chances to grow. I have confidence that you will all do well and succeed this school year. Just work hard and do you best and the rewards will follow!
