The As-Official-As-it's-Probably-Ever-Going-to-Get College-of-Wooster Footlights Website!

Brought to you by Mr. Happy Egg.

Last updated 8/13/2000: - Added a Top 50 Side-Effects of Being in Footlights Steve Schroeter mailed me and others a few weeks ago.
6/19/2000 - Added a new sketch sent to me by Chris Palestrant.

When I was a young lad in Ohio, I belonged to a radio comedy troupe at  The College of Wooster. The Footlights, founded by "Teg" Smith, who has dropped the Dune-inspired nickname and is now a More or Less Famous Graphic Novel Artist Under His Real Name, was originally going to be a live sketch comedy troupe modeled loosely after its Famous Cambridge Namesake, whence arose many Famous British Comedians.

It didn't turn out that way, of course.

A friend of ours, one Christopher Palestrant, DJed the midnight-to-two Friday-night timeslot on the campus radio station, WCWS, 90.9 FM Wooster, a public service of the College of Wooster (and your sound alternative). His show, "Nighthrob," consisted mainly of classic rock with occasional sillines from his friends. He invited us over one night in 1990 to do silly things. The following year found us inheriting his timeslot (for he had graduated), with Erik Ackerman as DJ. I myself was in Greece that year, so I missed out on the fun. When I returned for my senior year, we still had the timeslot, and indeed still called it "Footlights Presents Nighthrob." By the second semester, we had been given an earlier timeslot (10-12), and dropped the pretense of being a successor to Mr. Palestrant's show. The musical format was still technically classic rock, but Erik had graduated and so we resorted to a shifting roster of DJs, and format changed often as a result. Whatever was playing, every 15 minutes or so we'd do a sketch. To my knowledge, the show lasted another year or two after I graduated, and then fell apart for the usual reasons.

Assembled here for the enjoyment, if that's the word I mean, of the reader, or the nostalgia of the former member, are some sketches I happen to have on hand from the 1991-92 season. Most of the ones here were ones I helped write or at least typed, which is why I have them on hand. Others have been retyped from scripts I have; more will be added as time permits. If I ever get the chance perhaps I'll add some audio files as well; I have more Footlights stuff on tape than in print... Eventually I'd like to add the two Live Shows -- full-length radio "dramas" -- but that's a lot of retyping.

I've tried to identify the author from memory or probability of sketch material and style, as well as the first air date -- but some were written and first performed the year I was away, and some were performed the year I was there but I just plain don't remember, and careful notes were not kept by anyone, so far as I know.

The air dates of the sketches I helped write are more secure guesses based on date of file creation (and the author part I've got covered).

• On to the sketches...

• Back to oimoi home.

• Elsewhere entirely.

In memory of Josh Farthing, sound-effects-man extraordinaire. We miss you.
