I misunderstood Tim
last week, it turns out the tournament was a handicap tournament (Tim’s tells
me that’s whey he made Hirdy captain…), so OC’s never actually conceded any
goals in the group stage. That makes their performance all the more impressive
– conceding only two goals in a total of six games, and that included a penalty
shootout!
Once more, Happy
Christmas all, and all the best for the New Year.

OC’s proved to be the
comeback kings last Saturday at Seddon Fields – thrice coming from behind to
progress comfortably from a group of four securing a spot in the
quarter-finals.
Trailing by two goals
in each of the first two games, and by one in the third, OC’s came back to win
5-2, 4-2 and 4-1 respectively. The reward for that was a quarter-final meeting
with old foes America. The game finished all square at 1-1 despite OC’s having
a number of good chances to finish off the opposition. So penalties it was
going be... Miles scored the first for OC’s and Richie kept out America’s first
to give us the advantage. Gibbo then missed the second, and America looked to
have levelled but the spot kick was ordered to be retaken and the second
attempt was blasted well wide. Gus found the net with OC’s third and when
America could only find the post with their third, it was easy pickings as
Tancell put OC’s into the semi with a 3-0 win on penalties.
Richie got lobbed in
the semi-final clash with Grey Lynn, but OC’s ran out 2-1 winners and then
comfortably went on to win the final by three goals to nil. A $100 bar tab and
another piece of silverware for the cabinet was a great way to wrap up the
competitive football for 2007 - another hugely successful year for the club and
it can only get better in 2008.
Happy Christmas and all
the best for the New Year lads, will try to get hold of a few of you over the
festive period.

OC’s needed goals last
week in our 100th 6-A-Side fixture against Hold The Phone and they certainly
delivered; a brace a piece for both Gus and James easily saw off the
opposition. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough as OC’s finished in second
spot behind rivals Hamstrung on goal difference by a single goal. It’s a
disappointing way to miss out on top spot, but our failure to keep clean sheets
this round has proven costly. The solitary clean sheet we did keep is the
lowest number we’ve ever recorded in our ten attempts at the indoor competition.
It’s something that needs to be remedied when it all kicks off again at the
start of February - no doubt the boys will be rearing to go after the Christmas
break.

A comfortable victory
over the men in yellow last week saw OC’s jump back to the top of the table
with only one game to go. James netted his eleventh goal of the round, adding
to strikes from Gus and Stu along with the sixth OG of OC’s time at the YMCA. A
draw between Inter and Hamstrung has left the group wide open, with five of the
six sides all capable of winning. OC’s +1 better goal difference keeps us ahead
of both Hamstrung & Hold The Phone; all three teams are tied on six points.
Inter sit fourth with five points, ahead of Volcanics on goal difference. The
final and decisive game of 2007 sees us up against Hold The Phone next week,
where nothing less than a victory will do - the other results will be closely
watched. Come on OC’s!

We had a treat in store for us
this week... a downpour from the heavens (the first time I can remember
rain on a Wednesday evening). Dan green was the first on the score sheet with a
brilliant angled shot in the corner. The second goal was class - a brilliant
move ended with Gus smashing the ball across the keeper into the roof of the
net after a trade mark shimmy. The third and final goal was from Graham with a
simple diving header.

That’s the final game
of the year as the 7-A-Side takes a Christmas break. The competition resumes on
January 16th when we meet The Immigrants.
