    ABOUT HAYDEN

Hayden is the South Island correspondent for the site and he has put in a hell of a lot of effort into promoting the bodyboarding schene in the South Island. I don't know much else about him as of yet except that he is a Dunedin booger who is extremely stoked on bodyboarding.

    Interview questions

ED) You just returned back from a surf trip to Fiji in the middle of immense political instability with the rebel George Speight running amuck, what possessed you to go over there you crazy bastard?
Hayden) I just had to get away from the cold waves of Dunno’s. It was kinda touch and go for a while as I didn't decide to go until a couple of days before I left. With all that shit going on it kept the crowds very thin but there were guns and roadblocks everywhere. I had to come beck a couple of days earlier than planned because it was getting dodgy. The scariest part of the trip wasn’t to do with the coup; it was when this Welsh guy who was at the resort got real wasted on Kava and Beer. He then went and picked up this huge frog and licked it. (The frogs over there are poisonous and do weird shit to you if they poison you). He ended up running around the resort with a knife threatening to kill people and was knocking down doors and breaking stuff. All because of the frog. Everyone was freaked because we thought it was George Speight taking over our resort and everyone grabbed knifes and bats just incase it was. Classic.

ED) Was the trip worthwhile, what sort of waves/chicks did you end up scoring?
Hayden) The waves were pretty sick, especially for the first week. Desperations was breaking like D-Bar, only over shallow reef and Wilkes Pass was just espically long. For the last few days the waves went pretty crap, that’s when I started to miss Dunnos. As for the chicks…. I’ve got a girlfriend man.

ED) It must be hard adjusting back to the cold South Island winter after being away in the tropics, what are the waves like down there?
Hayden) I went for a surf at my local break on my first day back, man was it cold. I got some mean Icecream headaches but after that surf I was fine. Since I’ve back the waves have been super fun so I’m stoked.

ED) You’ve been sending use some sick pics of dunno’s reef, it looks like a bloody heavy wave, Where is it  and what is it like to surf?
Hayden) Yeah, for it’s size its heavy. It’s definitely the best barrel in Dunedin and they are so easy to make. It’s so shallow and hollow and every wave spits it’s guts out. The set up is hell scary though, it’s in shark heaven, it’s way offshore and is surrounded by heaps of seaweed, but I love it. As for its location – kiss my ass!

ED) There seems to be a pretty strong Booger scene down in Dunnos who are the main rippers down there?
Hayden) Guys like Mitchell Frew, Aiden Dickson, Casey Keen, Chris Thomson, Craig Latimer and Aaron Buchan are leading the way and a whole bunch aren’t too far behind.  Some of the guys mentioned stay away from the contest scene and just rip it up without anyone ever getting to see how good they actually are. Dunedin’s the hell place to be a booger. Reefs, wedges and points are dotted along the coastline plus there’s offshore waves everyday, you’ve just gotta go and look.

ED) Dunno's is renown for its excess supply of Great white sharks, do you have any dodgy shark stories to tell us and does it freak you out when surfing down there?
Hayden) Nah it doesn’t freak me out. I usually surf alone and I’m fine. Sometimes I get freaked out if the waters dark and you cant see underwater too much. I’ve only seen three in my whole surfing life. I’ve heard heaps of stories of people getting chased out by some and I heard heaps of yarns about MASSIVE ones that hang around the North Coast. One time at Allan’s Beach it was super fun and me and a few mates were out plus a whole bunch of surfers. They all reckon they saw a huge shark not far away so they all got out and we stayed in because we didn’t see it and got sick waves for over an hour with no one but us out. I spose it was a stupid thing to do but I’m still alive. I reckon the seals are more agro than the sharks down here anyway.

ED) You are currently attending Polytechnic, what course are you taking and what is it like?
Hayden) I’m actually at Teacher’s College. I was always keen to be a teacher because of the amount of holidays you get to surf. But now that I’ve had some experience in teaching I’m having my doubts because of the hell workload and I’ve found they get stuff all holidays.

ED) Anything else you would like to add?
Hayden) Come to Dunno’s oneday, the locals are friendly and will show you around.
