Northern
Street Rods is a family oriented Club - we try to promote
the safe enjoyment of Hot Rods and Street Machines. The Club not
only organises activities for its own Club members but also attends
events organised by both other Hot Rod Clubs. Community support
is given to local organisations who ask for a display of cars to
support their activities.
1996
Provincial Hot Rod Show
Northern Street Rods, as part of the N Z Hot Rod Association Zone 1 Clubs, helped with
the organising of a
Provincial Hot Rod Show in 1996. This was
held over Queens Birthday Weekend (mid winter in New Zealand) in the
local Turners Auction building. Although the number of cars on
show was only around 30 the quality and variety was unbelievable, from
classic 30's street rods and T Buckets through to stock American
muscle cars. Over the 3 days the public was treated to a spectacular display of chrome
and highly polished paint with the show achieving its purpose of promoting the
sport of hot rodding to the general public.
While the show was on
the participants were offered bus trips around Whangarei and north to
Paihia. The evening functions had top notch catered meals,
stand-up comedy, a DJ and a band. Comments from both
participants and the public were very positive.
For those
inclined to horsepower there were several blower equipped rods on
display. One '32 roadster even
had both nitrous and a
blower.
The
displays were very imaginative from an Ed Roth type effect,
through a garage scene, and a Mickey & Minnie Mouse tea party.

Annual
Christmas Run

Each year just before
Christmas (New Zealand's summer) the Club holds a
run to one of the local beaches or the Kai Iwi
lakes where members can "kick back" and
relax. This Christmas run is the major get-together
for Club members as the Club doesn't hold monthly
meetings. Members can meet each other
and catch up on the gossip with the Club putting
on a barbeque for the members and Santa arriving
to give out small gifts to the young and young at
heart.

Halloween
| For the last couple of years we have had a
very successful Halloween cruise through the
streets of Whangarei. It is a wonder that the
local law enforcement doesn't lock up the strange
and evil looking individuals who were cruising
town handing lollies out to the kids "trick
or treating". The cruise finishes at the
local Burger King where the staff are more than
a little surprised to have a costumed horde of
hot rodders descend upon them. The Burger King
staff take it all in their stride and get to choose one
of the participants as the
best dressed. There are usually prizes for the kids and
everyone has a great evening.

A
& P Summer Show 2000
| The local A & P Summer
Show in Decemeber 2000 gave the Club some much
needed exposure for the National Hot Rod Show
that we are organising for June 2002. The Club organised
a display of 28 of the Club members cars. These
covered all types from unfinished, though 30's /
40's classic street rods, into the 50's cruisers,
and the 60's / 70's street machines and muscle
cars. It gave the public a good cross section of
the sport of Hot Rodding.
For
further entertainment we organised our
first ever "rocker cover" races under
the guidence of Chief Marshall Aaron. Some of the
creations showed huge amounts of work, including
custom paint, so that it was difficult to believe
they were ever dirty, oily rocker covers.
