What is broomball? This is an age-old question that all players of the sport will know about (ad nauseam). So here's a little hint, for all those non-players out there, about what broomball is:

Broomball is basically ice hockey, except players wear sneakers instead of skates. Players wield a broom (a paddle-shaped stick), and hit a heavy plastic ball (generally orange or black in colour) roughly half the size of a football.

A broomball team consists of six players (five in NQBA competition, due to rink size) - a goaltender, two defenders, and three forwards. Substitutes are allowed throughout each game.

Each game consists of two twenty-minute halves. In some competitions, if the scores are tied after normal time, overtime is held. Two referees are on the ice in official competitions.

Expatriate Canadians introduced broomball to Australia in 1981. The first national broomball championships were held in Canberra in 1984, and have been held annually since. Townsville hosted the 1999 Australian National Broomball Championships.

Broomball is a growing sport worldwide, played in countries such as Canada, Japan, the USA, and Australia.

Of course, not all of what happens at the NQBA happens by fluke - there's a hard-working team behind the scenes making sure things goes off without a hitch.

At the recent AGM, the new Executive Committee was elected. They all got elected unopposed, and I'm sure that the association will move forward under their guidance:

If you're interested in coming in to check out what broomball is all about, you can either come down on Saturday's or Monday's (see below for times). The Saturday competition is for juniors and parents who've never played before (click here for more info), while Monday is our seniors mixed competition.

If you are interested in getting a mixed team together for Monday nights, we encourage you to e-mail our secretary (click on the link below). She will get you organised with the paperwork you need, and from there, you can come down on Monday nights and play a gentle game to get used to the sport of broomball.
