Push of Pike 2006
Renaissance Wargaming Tournament
The third annual Push of Pike
tournament was hosted by the North Shore Wargames Club on the weekend of
2-3 September 2006.
The theme for this tournament was Early Western European armies from
1494-1540 including the Italian Wars, Habsburg-Valois Wars and other
armies of that era. Numbers were a bit down this year with only eight of
us playing, but we had some great games. The final game to decide the
tournament winner came down to a contest betweent two bodies of
landsknechts in the French and Danish armies, with the win going to John
Way.
Our thanks
to Urban Warfare for their
support of the tournament.
Best
Presented Army
Bryan
was given the prize for the Best Presented Army for his wonderfully
painted Maximilians. The models are by Essex Miniatures, and Bryan spent
the last year getting them painted. Their performance on the battlefield wasn't so good,
but they looked great! Even while they were lining up for this photo one
of them has already recoiled. And just ignore the Swiss flags, they really are
Landsknechts.
Competition Results

2. 331 points Craig Love (Auckland) Valois French 1512-1522

Round One
Craig (Valois
French) 110 - 0
Richard (Early Tudor English)
Ian (Venetian Italian) 110 - 0 Kendall (Spanish
Imperial)
Philip (Neapolitan Spanish) 109 - 1 Bryan (Maximilian
Imperial)
Richard (Scandinavian Union) 6 - 4 John (Early
Danish)
Round
One. The Neapolitan Spanish army. A couple of field guns are deployed
behind fortifications. A column of cavalry is moving past them on the
road, and behind is the baggage camp and a pontoon wagon. The pontooneers
never get to build a bridge as all rivers turn out to be paltry.
Round Two
Craig (Valois
French) 110 - 0 Ian (Venetian Italian)
Kendall (Spanish
Imperial) 109 - 1 Richard (Early Tudor English)
Richard (Scandinavian Union) 109 - 1 Philip (Neapolitan Spanish)
John (Early
Danish) 109 - 1 Bryan (Maximilian
Imperial)
 Round
Two: Early Tudor English (left-hand side) vs Spanish Imperial (right).
Round Three
Craig (Valois
French) 110 - 0 Richard (Scandinavian Union)
Richard (Early Tudor English) 110 - 0 Bryan (Maximilian
Imperial)
John (Early
Danish) 109 - 1 Ian (Venetian Italian)
Philip (Neapolitan Spanish) 109 - 1 Kendall (Spanish
Imperial)
Round Four
Ian (Venetian Italian) 110 - 0 Philip (Neapolitan Spanish)
Kendall (Spanish
Imperial) 110 - 0 Bryan (Maximilian
Imperial)
John (Early
Danish) 109 - 1 Craig (Valois
French)
Richard (Early Tudor English) 108 - 2 Richard (Scandinavian Union)

Round
Four. The final game to decide first and second place. The Danes are at
the top of the picture facing the Valois French. The French right flank
has a large group of francs archers, who became demoralised but did enough
damage to the opposing command to also demoralise it. The French have a
micro-command lurking on the road, one general and a couple of light
horse. The LH kept out of trouble, but their general didn't! At 3ME, the
command wasn't too much of a loss to the army. In the centre of the
battlefield both armies had a block of Landsknechts. The Danes had a slight advantage going in to the push of pike. A couple of rounds of
combat later and the Danes had a decisive advantage. The win went to
John's Danish army.
