Dies ist eine sehr schwere Frage. Ich könnte eher beurteilen, was ich nicht so gut kann: nämlich im Tor spielen. Ich denke, dass ich relativ stark bin im Zweikampf. Das liegt vielleicht daran, dass ich etwas mehr trainieren konnte, als andere Spielerinnen, da ich als Schülerin sehr viel Zeit hatte. Ich lege eben sehr viel Wert auf Kraft- und Ausdauertraining.

This is a very tough question. I could more easily judge what I can't do so well- namely goal keeping. I think I'm relatively strong in the charge start. That perhaps lies in the fact that I was able to train more than other players, because I had much more time as a student. I put a lot of emphasis on power and endurance training.

Ich habe in Göttingen über mehere Jahre eine Schülermannschaft (10-14 jährige Mädchen) trainiert. Außerdem überlege ich wie bereits erwähnt, in Liblar eine neue Damenmannschaft zu gründen und zu trainieren. Einen Schiedsrichterausweis besitze ich auch. Doch das hat den Grund, dass man in Deutschland nur dann Spiele bei Turnieren pfeifen darf, wenn man einen besitzt. Ich habe auch nur die Lizenz für die unterste Kategorie und pfeife eher schlecht.

I trained a team of school students (10-14 year old girls) in Göttingen over several years. Also, as I've previously mentioned, I'm thinking about establishing and training a new ladies team in Liblar. I also have a referee's license. I only have that because you need it to referee games at tournaments in Germany. I have the lowest category and ref rather badly.

I've participated in two world championships: 2000 in Sao Paulo/Brazil and 2002 in Essen/Germany.

Die Organisation in Essen war in meinen Augen sehr gut. Ich kenne kaum ein Turnier, dass so gut organisiert ist. Spielerisch war diese Weltmeisterschaft für uns natürlich etwas durchwachsen. Wir haben immerhin auch zwei Spiele verloren und standen kurz vor dem Ausscheiden. Ich habe zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht mehr geglaubt, dass man so noch Weltmeister werden könnte. Doch genau das war das Besondere an dieser WM. Wir haben es noch geschafft, die Nervosität abzulegen und zu unserem Spiel zurück zu finden. Und deshalb fand ich diese WM auch besser als die in Brasilien.

The organization in Essen was very good in my opinion. I haven't known any other tournament to be so well organized. This world championship was, playing wise, naturally a learning experience for us. We lost two games and were nearly out of the running. I believed at that moment that we could no longer become World Champions. Yet that is exactly what was so special about this World Championships. We managed to discard the nervousness and to find our way back to play our game. And I therefore found this World Champs to be better than that in Brazil.

Ich habe auch an zwei Europameisterschaften teilgenommen, sowie mit dem Vereinsteam das ein oder andere internationale Turnier besucht. Dabei haben wir teils in der Damen- teils aber auch in der Herrenklasse gespielt. Außerdem profitierte ich mehrere Jahre von dem Zusammenspiel mit Klaske, einer niederändischen Spielerin, in meinem Vereinsteam. Ich habe auch an einigen Mixedturnieren mit internationaler Beteiligung teilgenommen.

I've participated in two European Championships, as well as travelling to other International tournaments with the club team. We played in Women's grade and also, partly, in Men's grade. Moreover I profited from several years of playing with Klaske, a Dutch player, in my club team. I've also played in some Mixed tournaments with international participants.

Am meisten freue ich mich immer auf die Weltmeisterschaften. Dies ist das Turnier mit dem höchsten Niveau, da sich alle Teams hundertprozentig darauf vorbereiten. Außerdem finde ich es toll, so viele SpielerInnen aus aller Welt zu treffen.

I always look forward to the world championships the most. This is the tournament with the highest standard of play because all the teams prepare themselves a hundred percent for it. Moreover I find it crazy to meet so many players from around the world.

Wir wollten natürlich gewinnen. Immerhin waren wir auch Titelverteidiger. Dennoch wusste ich natürlich, dass das sehr schwierig sein würde, da die Konkurrenz sehr stark war.

Naturally we wanted to win. Nevertheless, we were also defending champions. I knew naturally that that would be very difficult, because the competition was very strong.

I was annoyed, as I am every year, at the financing of the German team. Some of the expenditure still had to be sorted out during the matches. And in the end, once again the players had to pay for it. In spite of that everything actually ran perfectly in our team. We mutually motivated ourselves again and again, although in between it we had a difficult phase.

Ich denke, dass wir in Deutschland einen sehr guten Nachwuchs haben. Dies spiegeln auch die Ergebnisse in der U21 wieder. Vielleicht hängt unser Erfolg auch damit zusammen, dass wir ein sehr gut eingespieltes, homogenes Team sind. Außerdem denke ich, dass unser Angriff sehr effektiv ist, da wir viele sehr wurfstarke Spielerinnen haben.

I think that we have a very good new generation in Germany. The results in the U21 again reflect this. Perhaps our success is connected also with the fact that we are a very well brought in, homogeneous team. Additionally I think that our attack is very effective, since we have many players with very strong throws on the inside.

Ich wage es zu bezweifeln, dass wir in Japan den Titel verteidigen werden. Die meisten Spielerinnen aus meinem Team haben verkündet, dass sie nach dieser WM aufhören wollen. Wir werden in den nächsten zwei Jahren also ein völlig neues Team aufbauen müssen. Doch da wir einen sehr guten Nachwuchs haben, könnten wir es vielleicht schaffen, schnell wieder Anschluss an die Weltspitze zu finden. Ein viel größeres Problem wird die Finanzierung sein. Es gibt hier nämlich kaum Spielerinnen, die sich die Reise nach Japan leisten könnten. Und dann ist die Gefahr sehr groß, dass nicht die besten mitfahren werden, sondern die, die es sich leisten können.

I dare to doubt that we will successfully defend the title in Japan. Most players from my team have announced that they want to stop after these World Champs. We will thus have to build a completely new team in the next two years. But, since we have a very good new generation, we could perhaps do so and rapidly find a world class performance once again. A much larger problem will be the financing (of the tour). There would be few players here, who could afford the journey to Japan. And then there is the very real danger that it won't be the best who are sent, but those who can afford it.

Dies ist die Frage, die man sich irgendwann auch selbst stellt. Geld bekomme ich dafür keins, ganz im Gegenteil, ich hatte dafür auch gewisse Unkosten. Und ob es einem wirklich Ruhm bringt? Einige, die dabei waren oder sich auskennen, gratulierten mir. Ich werde zu einigen Ehrungen eingeladen und erhalte kleine Geschenke. Doch andere lachen darüber und meinen, Kanupolo wäre eh kein richtiger Sport und wäre so unbekannt, dass da jeder gewinnen könne. Also eigentlich ist es nur die eigene Freude und der Lohn für das viele Training. Und es hat natürlich auch unheimlich viel Spaß gemacht!

This is the question, which I ask myself sometimes. I receive no money for it, in fact completely the opposite, I have certain expenses to pay for it. And whether it really brings fame? Some, who had been there or knew what it meant, congratulated me. I have been invited to some honour ceremonies and received some small gifts. But others laugh at it and believe that Canoe Polo is not a real sport, that so few people know about it, anyone could win. So really, it's only my personal joy and the pay back for a lot of training. And of course it was terribly fun!
