The World Canoe Polo Championships saw 19 Women's teams and 25 Men's teams competing for medals over a week. New Zealand Women were 6th and New Zealand Men were 15th.

Special thanks from the Women's team to KG Wanderfalke, especially Phillip, Anna, Kai, Svenne, Mario, Sebastian and Inger for their assistance and generosity during our stay in Essen. The women's team competed at the Ruhrpokal tournament prior to the Worlds, which was hosted by Wanderfalke. The Men's team were playing in Belgium and France at Pre-Worlds before travelling to Germany.

There has been considerable discussion about the draw. In particular, the fact that teams were out of the running for placings and medals if they lost their first two games (hence our NZ Men's team is now 19th), and the way the groups were organised with the seeding of teams. The German women's team were grouped with the Australians and the Netherlands, a particularly difficult group. The NZ womens squad had an other training weekend in Otaki over Queen's Birthday weekend, and the Top 5 Women have been selected- but they haven't been announced! Three more players are yet to be chosen, and competition is fierce. The team has done everything from running up hills in the dark, til recently braving the high ropes course at Otaki with the inimitable Barry! Rumour has it the team so far is..

May The current Men's World Cup squad is now an automatic selection for the World Cup in Essen, Germany this September. The squad earlier struggled to attract a coach. A temporary player/coach position was filled by James Mitchell. The preferred option of an off-water coach could only be met by the withdrawl of Paul Rountree from the playing squad. His appointment, and the appointment of his partner, Sara Stodart, as manager, has ensured that New Zealand will field a Men's team, in what is considered to be a 'developmental tour'. This squad recently attended a training camp in Auckland, at the Millenium Sports Institute, on the weekend of April 20th.

The withdrawal of several players from the selection process has left the team with eight men. They are:

Mens Squad: Aaron Jacobs(N), Karl Reece (N), David Oosterdijk (N), James Mitchell(C), Jason Papps(C), Paul Hardy (C), Eoin Whelan(C), Jason Juno (C)
Coach: Paul Rountree (N) Manager: Sara Stoddart (N).

The National Women's squad will be selected on Queen's Birthday weekend, at a four day training camp at Otaki in the Central North Island. The final day will be held in Wellington, in a full length court.

A Beautiful Mind raises $600+ for squads

It may not have cleaned up all the Oscar nominations, but this movie was a star for the Northern Region. Tickets were sold to over 130 people for the 25th March screening, and the audience were well entertained by an excellent film. Better yet, our National Squads fund is about to be over $600 richer, thanks to Village Force Cinemas and the NCPA. Thank you to all you movie buffs out there, for a stunning result and an excellent night out.

Otaki Women's Camp The New Zealand Womens Squad attended a training camp in Otaki, the weekend before Easter. Central region representative players were obviously relishing the opportunity to peak for the Australian Interstate Championships, which were held the following weekend. Manager Robyn Ratcliff continued to explain fundraising opportunities to the female squad, and confirmed that over 17 application forms for grants (collected by the players from their different areas) have been sent to various organisations. Coach Marty Dinniss gave various opportunities for players to discuss the Worlds Schedule, and the players were nicely exhausted by the range of torturous activities he devised.
Next camp: Queens Birthday Weekend, June 1st to 4th.
NZ Men's Squad in Australia All members of the National Men's squad attended the Australian Interstate Championships over Easter. Coach Paul Rountree organised a camp to be held with the Australian Men's squad, immediately following the competition, on April 1st. This camp was run between 10:30am and 2pm. The NZ Men's squad finished with a loss to the Australian men of only one point, final score 4 -3.
Next camp: Queens Birthday Weekend, June 1st to 3rd.
March Northern duo Paul Rountree and his partner Sarah are set to travel as Coach and Manager (respectively) with the NZ men's team, to Essen, Germany, in September. James Mitchell happily relinquished the role of Men's coach to focus his attention on playing at the World Championships. Although Paul withdrew from the squad to focus on the coaching role, all agree that an off-water coaching position will greatly enhance the squad's performance at the Worlds.
January

The NZCPA squads are scheduled to attend their second training camps on January 27th. Marty Dinniss(NZ Womens coach) has set a paddling fitness program for the squad, and Robyn Ratcliff (Manager) has been researching funding avenues. Executive Director Maree Burnett would like to receive applications from anyone interested in being Squad Manager. Meanwhile, James Mitchell from Central Region has been appointed Men's Player/Coach.
