The North region of Brazil has two main levels of terrain. The Guiana Highlands and the Amazon Lowlands. The area surrounding the Amazon River is called Amazonia, and has the richest diversity of species in the world. It is generally a very poor area, since most of the wealth belongs to the mines and metropolitan cities.
