| After Yoshiyuki Tomino (the famous "Kill 'em all Tomino") finished V Gundam, the Gundam universe was approaching its fifteenth anniversary. To commemorate the event, three alternate universe series were created, including Mobile Fighter G Gundam, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing, and After War Gundam X. The first of them, G Gundam (short for God Gundam) took a decidedly different spin, making it easily the most debatable Gundam alternate universe. While the original Mobile Suit Gundam was the mecha show that moved mecha away from the realm of super-robots with weapons of war, where the pilot need not yell out a move, G Gundam actually ressurected that feel. Instead of Mobile Suit wars, Mobile Fighter Gundam tournaments should decide the future. Directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa of Giant Robo fame, G Gundam features battles betwen Gundam, each representing a different Earth nation. Characters, unlike Tomino, sometimes might appear to die only to come back, before a move a Gundam Fighter would shout out the moves name, and some elements like some of the Gundam designs, are outright humorous. It is set in FC 60 (Future Century 60) and takes place during the 13th Gundam Tournament. |
