Community Outreach Information

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:

The newly redesigned Habitat Sampler pattern is being stitched by several of our members.  The total count of samplers for 2005 was 11 which were stitched by several members.

We also continue to donate toiletries and baby items to the BETA Center fo ryoung mothers and families in Orlando. Another project has us knitting caps for newborns at the Florida Hospital.

At the December luncheon we collected teddy bears for the pediatric oncology unit at Arnold Palmer Hospital. And, we recently received permission to stitch Kissing Pillows for the military, a project requested by many of our members. Work has already started on preparations for the Central Florida Fair in April with our chapter planning to sponsor a ribbon for a needlework entry.

The Central Florida Chapter Outreach projects are dynamic.

PAST ACTIVITIES:
A new school year has begun with 19 middle-school students enrolled in the "Patches" exploratory class at Windy Ridge School.  The students will be learning crazy quilt and paper piecing techniques.

We had a group of CFCers help out with a Girl Scout-sponsored day camp in Kissimmee.  The theme was "It's Sew Easy."  Age range was first through sixth.  Needle threaders were reported to be in short supply.  The program provided the first step toward a beautiful quilt to be assembled later in the week.  The quilt is displayed at the Citrus Council Service Center in Orlando.

CFC-EGA sponsored an exhibit in the glass case at the Herndon Library during March and April 2003.

Our On-going project is the Habitat Sampler.  In September 2003, 15 houses were dedicated just in Orlando.  In April 2004, 3 samplers were presented completing the Orlando group of 10 at Roseboro.  A lot of stitching went into providing a personalized sampler celebrating each new home.

Textile Preservation with the Orange County Historical Museum.
These photos are of one team at work in the Historical Society Museum's vault on the Preservation project.  In these photos an item's condition is being assessed by the team and then cataloged for entry into the Museum's database.  The people who handle the textile items are wearing cotton gloves to keep any oil on their hands from getting on the antique textiles in the collection.  All the paper products being used on this project are acid free.
