Excitement about the upcoming Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference cross country championships, to be hosted by New Mexico Highlands University on Saturday, Oct. 21, has begun to build.

The event will include men's and women's races and is the first Highlands-hosted RMAC championship in several years.

Meet activities will begin around 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, (details to be updated later) at the Pendaries Golf Course, approximately 15 miles north of Las Vegas off N.M. 518.

A coaches meeting will be held at Charlie's Spic-n-Span near the NMHU campus 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20.

Cross country is probably the RMAC's strongest sport on a national level.  The Western State men and the Adams State women are the defending national champions in NCAA II and have held a virtual stranglehold on the top two spots in the nation in both men's and women's cross country for much of the past decade.  In the most recent NCAA II polls (Oct. 10), ASC and WSC were ranked first and second, and CU-Colorado Springs was seventh in the women's ranks.
All-Americans Omar Munoz and Anna Williams will lead NMHU
On the men's side, Western and Adams were second and third, respectively.  NMHU's men, who have competed in two consecutive national championship meets, have been rated as high as 25th this season.

The RMAC women's race will feature the host Cowgirls as well as ASC, WSC, CUCS, Colorado Christian, Colorado Mines, Fort Hays State, Fort Lewis, Mesa State, Regis, and Nebraska-Kearney.  The men's field will include the host Cowboys and WSC, ASC, Colorado Christian, Colorado Mines, Fort Hays State, Fort Lewis, Regis, Nebraska-Kearney and CUCS.

Other results: Cowgirl volleyball (17-3, 10-2 RMAC) fell at nationally ranked Metro State 3-1 before sweeping Colorado Mines 3-0.  Cowboy football (3-4, 1-3 RMAC) lost at Colorado Mines 27-23. Cowgirl soccer dropped a pair of home matches, a 1-0 overtime war with Metro and a 4-1 win by Regis.  (See team pages -- links at left -- for details)
