~~~~Love Above All~~~~
Chapter 2
After dinner, Nick and Elisha shooed the kids down to the rec room to watch some TV. "Are your legs hurting, honey?" Elisha looked at him quizzically and he pointed to the cane, still leaning against the counter. "Oh! A bit today. You know how the change in temperatures gets to me sometimes. And we did a lot of walking today, plus the dance class." She placed her hand over his. "It's nothing to worry about, Nicky." He smiled at her. The only time she called him Nicky anymore was when she thought he was being overprotective of her. She had decided he looked too 'dignified' to be called that now. Her little way of telling him that everything was alright. They finished up the dishes and went down to join the kids.
"Daddy! 'Becca won't let me watch my video!" Brian hollered out when he saw his parents coming down the stairs. "That's cause his video is stupid!" Rebecca replied. "Rebecca!" Elisha admonished her. "What did you want to watch, buddy?" Nick asked Brian. Brian held up a well worn copy of the TeleTubbies. "You used to like this quite a bit, if I remember right!" Nick teased his daughter. "Oh daddy!" "Come on 'Bec, you've watched your show, give Brian a chance to watch his." Elisha said pulling Rebecca down on the sofa with her. Nick popped the video in and placed Brian on his lap as they settled in beside Elisha. He was amused watching Rebecca trying to pretend she wasn't enjoying the video. She looked so much like her mother. Short, dark hair, pretty heart shaped face, slim but sturdy build. She seemed to have inherited all of Elisha's traits. Except for her love of video games, that was completely from Nick. He had given her a Gameboy at age 2 and she took right to it. He remembered how Rebecca's eyes had lit up when Nick showed her his stash of games systems and games and he had promised her she could use them.
Brian started to fidget and asked to sit with his mom and baby Carter. As with their other two children, they didn't want to know what this one was until he arrived. They had called it baby Carter one day and baby Carter it remained. Elisha's doctors had advised that this be their last child. Because of the previous damage to Elisha's spine and joints, each pregnancy wore on her and made the chance of the paralysis returning more likely if something should happen to go wrong. The doctor had told them that this current pregnancy was risky, but she thought he was just concerned about her age. He knew better than to say anything like that to her face though.
If Rebecca was Elisha's daughter, than Brian was definately Nick's son. Everything about him, his blond hair, crystal blue eyes and bright, beaming smile was reminiscent of Nick. Yes, Brian liked to dance, but he was an entertainer in general. He was a big ham, just like his father, funny and charming. "Mommy." Brian said sleepily, "Tell baby Carter to stop kicking me!" Nick laughed and placed his large hand on Elisha's stomach. "Wow, he's really moving in there!" "Tell me about it!" Elisha replied, sarcastically. "I agree with you Brian." She shook her finger playfully at her tummy, as did Brian. Together, they chanted. "You stop that, baby Carter!" Brian looked at his mom with wide surprised eyes. "He stopped!" "For now. C'mon let's go up to bed. You're looking very sleepy and just look at 'Becca." Rebecca had fallen asleep curled up on her fathers chest, her head on his shoulder. "Maybe baby Carter fell asleep too." Brian mumbled. "Let's hope so, than maybe Mama Carter can sleep." Nick looked at her, his blue eyes twinkling. "You know, we have to think of a name for him, we can't keep calling him Carter. Brian is going to think that is his real name!" "So what's wrong with that?" Elisha giggled. "Carter Carter, I like it!" Nick rolled his eyes and started up the stairs with Rebecca in his arms.
Once they had the kids tucked in and settled, Elisha told Nick she was turning in too. "We had a pretty busy day, I'm exhausted!" She said to him, yawning. "Actually, I'll join you. I'm just going to make sure I turned off the TV downstairs first." When Nick re-entered the bedroom, Elisha was still trying to find a comfortable position. "I swear I'm as big as a house this time! It's twins Nick, I just know it!" "I'm sorry." he said sympathetically. "Sure you are!" she laughed, rolling on to her side. Nick moved in close behind her and rubbed her lower back. "I love you Elisha." She sighed and let her head fall back against his shoulder. "I love you too Nick." In unison they said, "More and more, every day." They both laughed and settled in for the night.
