Chapter 3

The next morning, over breakfast, Nick was trying to persuade Elisha to come to the recording studio. "With the kids Nick? It'll be crazy, they'll get bored and wreck the place!" Nick looked at her pleadingly. "Brian will entertain them. I just want you to hear the song we recorded yesterday and get your opinion of it." He took her hands in his. "What else do you have planned for today?" Elisha got up and checked the calendar by the fridge. "Nothing actually, Rebecca goes to her pre-school class this afternoon. I'll probably take Brian over to see Grandma Jane during that. But, I don't know Nick, the kids will be restless at the studio." Brian slid off his chair and came over to Elisha. Climbing into her lap, he left sticky handprints on her jeans. "I want to go hear daddy, okay mommy?" He planted a kiss on her cheek and wrapped his arms around her neck. "I'll be good!" Elisha pinched his chubby cheeks. "Did you have to inherit his puppy dog face too, son?" She threw up her hands. "Alright, I know when I'm beat. We'll go listen to daddy sing this morning!" "Yay!" Nick, Brian and Rebecca cheered, waving their arms in the air. "Why do I get the feeling I was just plotted against?" Elisha laughed.

When they arrived at the studio Brian immediately pounced on the two Carter children. "'Becca, Bri! My two favourite kids!" He picked them up and twirled them around. "Did you guys come to visit Uncle Brian?" "We came to hear daddy sing!" Little Brian informed him, matter of factly. "Oh." Brian looked crest-fallen. "I thought you might want to see what I have in my truck for some special kids, but that's okay. I can find..." The kids started hopping around Brian chanting. "We want to see! We want to see!" Brian winked at Nick and took Rebecca and Brian by the hand and walked toward his truck on the far side of the parking lot. "It's really too bad that he and Linda can't have children." Elisha mused, watching him. "Why haven't they adopted?" Nick put his arm around Elisha's shoulders and they began to walk to the studio. "I think Brian thought this would all die down. They didn't want to bring a child into their crazy schedule. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried soon though."

Kevin looked up from the recording panel and waved. As soon as he could he removed his headphones and came out to greet Elisha. "Hey there, Elisha! You are looking quite l..." he paused. "C'mon say it!" Elisha burst out. "I'm looking quite large!" "Actually, I was going to say lovely, but shoot! What have you got in there anyway? An elephant?" Elisha shot him a scathing look. "You are braver than I am, man!" Nick laughed. "She'd hit me if I said anything like that!" Elisha's face softened and she stroked Nick's cheek. "We don't even joke about that Nick. You know I would never hit you." Kevin changed the subject quickly. "Where are the kids?" "Brian is distracting them while Elisha listens to the new track. Can you run it for her?"

The three of them walked into the room. Nick sat Elisha on a stool in the center of the room and stood back to watch her reaction. He nodded to Kevin and the opening strains of the music filled the room. As soon as the vocals started, her face lit up. "It's our wedding song! Oh Nick, it sounds beautiful!" Tears began falling down her face as she recalled the wonderful day when Nick became her husband. "Mommy, why is this song making you cry?" Elisha looked down and saw Rebecca's urgent face staring up at her. She picked her up and placed her on her lap. "This was mommy and daddy's wedding day song. You remember hearing it on the video?" Rebecca nodded. "This was the first song we danced to. Kevin, Brian, Howie and AJ sang it for us." Nick chuckled. "Actually, mommy cried and daddy held her up!" "I don't like it when you cry!" Brian piped up. Elisha laughed and wiped the tears away. "But these are happy tears so they're okay!" he pronounced. "It's beautiful Nick, but could you record it without the music?" Elisha asked. "That's the way it was first sung and the music just doesn't seem to fit. It sounded so lovely accapella" Kevin nodded his head in agreement. "We'll try it later, it might just work." "Okay kids!" Nick grabbed his children and ran out of the room. "Time for daddy to sing, okay? You sit here with mommy and listen for a little bit?"
